About the position

The Maintenance Technician II position at Washington Unified School District involves performing journey-level tasks in the maintenance, repair, and construction of district buildings, structures, grounds, and equipment. Under general supervision, the technician will engage in a variety of skilled trade work across multiple areas, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, locks, glazing, grounds maintenance, and painting. The role also encompasses semi-skilled tasks in areas where the technician may have less experience, as well as assisting in the maintenance of HVAC systems. The technician will operate a full range of power equipment, including grounds-keeping and heavy equipment, and will be required to respond to emergency calls when off duty. This position is essential for ensuring that the district's facilities are well-maintained and safe for students and staff. In addition to the core responsibilities, the technician will be expected to maintain tools, equipment, and machinery in good repair, and to adhere to safe work practices. The role requires the ability to estimate time and materials for projects, interpret blueprints and diagrams, and maintain accurate working records. The technician will also be responsible for maintaining swimming pool equipment and ensuring the chemical content of the water is at prescribed levels. The position demands a collaborative approach, as the technician will need to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with colleagues and other stakeholders in the district. The ideal candidate will possess a journeyman-level experience in a designated trade area, along with a valid California operator's license. The role is physically demanding, requiring frequent standing, walking, bending, and the ability to lift and carry materials and equipment. The technician will also need to demonstrate proficiency in using various tools and equipment safely and skillfully, ensuring that all maintenance tasks are completed to a high standard.

Responsibilities

  • Perform journey-level tasks in the maintenance, repair, and construction of district buildings, structures, grounds, and equipment.
  • Engage in skilled trade work in areas such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, locks, glazing, grounds maintenance, and painting.
  • Assist in maintaining HVAC systems and perform semi-skilled tasks in areas with less background.
  • Operate a full range of power equipment, including grounds-keeping and heavy equipment.
  • Respond to emergency calls when off duty and perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and machinery in good repair and adhere to safe work practices.
  • Estimate time and materials needed to complete projects and interpret blueprints and diagrams.
  • Maintain accurate working records and prepare brief reports.
  • Perform tasks associated with maintaining swimming pool equipment and chemical content of water.

Requirements

  • Possession of an appropriate California operator's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Must be a journeyman in the designated trade area as needed.
  • One year of journey-level experience in building maintenance or construction work, or four years of increasingly responsible maintenance work including a variety of semi-skilled trade work.
  • Basic knowledge of equipment, materials, and terminology used in swimming pool maintenance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Journeyman painting experience preferred.
