About the position

The Maintenance Technician I/II position at the City of Escondido involves performing a variety of manual and semi-skilled duties related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of city facilities, including streets, parks, and traffic control devices. This role is essential for ensuring the upkeep of public works and enhancing the quality of municipal services. The position starts at the Maintenance Technician I level, with opportunities for advancement to II after successful performance and training completion.

Responsibilities

• Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled construction, landscape, and maintenance work, including low voltage electrical, painting, street patching, and curb repair.
• Operate hand and portable power tools and motor-driven equipment on streets and highways.
• Participate and may lead a crew in assigned work projects.
• Maintain simple records and perform litter prevention and debris removal.
• Prepare soil for planting and transplanting, and care for lawns and grounds.
• Assist in installation and repair of irrigation systems, fencing, and lighting.
• Patch streets and assist in paving streets and alleys.
• Construct and repair curbs and gutters, and place traffic control and warning signs.

Requirements

• Graduation from the 12th grade or equivalent.
• For Maintenance Technician I: 12 months of experience performing general maintenance, including at least six months of manual labor experience.
• For Maintenance Technician II: 12 months of experience at the Maintenance Technician I level with successful completion of the training plan.
• Possession of a valid Class 'C' California driver's license at the time of application.

Nice-to-haves

• Certified Tree Worker Certificate (ISA) and Certified Line Clearance certificate are highly desirable.
