About the position

SHELTER, Inc. is seeking a dedicated Maintenance Technician to join our team in Concord or Fairfield, with regular travel within the Bay Area. This full-time position is essential for ensuring that our properties and facilities are maintained to the highest standards, in line with the regulations set by REAC and HUD. The Maintenance Technician will be responsible for addressing day-to-day maintenance issues at SHELTER, Inc. owned properties, ensuring that all tasks are completed promptly, efficiently, and effectively. The role requires a proactive approach to maintenance, including performing minor repairs, managing property turnover procedures, and maintaining harmonious relations with residents and tenants. The Maintenance Technician will engage in a variety of tasks, including but not limited to electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and carpentry work. Responsibilities include performing minor repairs to building appliances and fixtures, changing locks, replacing floor tiles, clearing clogged drains, and conducting general cleaning and maintenance of unit interiors. The technician will also be responsible for preparing written recommendations for physical repairs and replacements, ensuring that all work aligns with the organization's standards and budgetary goals. This position requires a commitment to safety procedures and the ability to interact professionally with residents and tenants, addressing their needs and concerns with discretion. In addition to technical skills, the Maintenance Technician must possess strong communication skills, the ability to prioritize tasks, and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism. The role may also involve maintaining grounds and landscaping at certain locations, contributing to the overall upkeep of SHELTER, Inc.'s properties. This position is a vital part of our mission to prevent and end homelessness by providing safe and well-maintained housing for low-income and disadvantaged families and individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the property is maintained physically to meet the standards set by REAC, HUD, and the organization.
  • Perform minor repairs to building appliances and fixtures, including changing locks and replacing floor tiles.
  • Clear clogged drains and repair or replace plumbing fixtures as needed.
  • Patch holes in walls and clean unit interiors.
  • Conduct miscellaneous carpentry repairs and perform minor masonry duties.
  • Engage in interior and exterior painting, build or repair fences, and install window coverings and major appliances.
  • Follow safety procedures and suggest improvements as necessary.
  • Ensure all vacant home turnover procedures are followed in a timely manner.
  • Prepare written recommendations for physical repairs and replacements for the supervisor.
  • Maintain grounds and landscaping at certain locations as required.
  • Promote harmonious relations among residents, tenants, vendors, and the community.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two years experience performing building maintenance including repairs, carpentry, minor electrical, minor plumbing, painting, refurbishing, and cleaning.
  • Working knowledge of building maintenance systems.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Basic knowledge of Landlord/Tenant Laws, Fair Housing Laws, and ADA regulations.
  • Access to a personal car for agency business and a DMV record that permits insurance coverage under SHELTER, Inc.'s automobile policy.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
