About the position

The Maintenance Technician position at the Suffolk County Courthouse involves a range of skilled trades duties that support the management and maintenance of state-owned courthouses and leased facilities. This role is essential for ensuring that the facilities are operational and well-maintained, contributing to the overall mission of the Facilities Management and Capital Planning department. The position is designated as a union role and is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement with O.P.E.I.U., Local 6. The working hours for this position are from 6 AM to 2 PM, and it may require flexibility to work outside of these hours during emergencies. As a Maintenance Technician, you will be responsible for assisting in various trades, including plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, and general maintenance tasks. The role requires the application of complex materials and compounds consistent with general contracting work. You will perform minor repairs, assist in servicing plumbing fixtures, and conduct minor electrical work that does not require a licensed electrician. Additionally, you will maintain machinery and tools, ensuring they are clean and in optimal working order. The position also involves applying paint, varnish, and stain to surfaces to protect and enhance their appearance. The Maintenance Technician II level requires more advanced skills and experience, including preventive maintenance and repairs to HVAC systems, routine repairs to electrically powered equipment, and carpentry work. This role demands a commitment to continuous learning and improvement, as well as a strong understanding of facility management methods and operational best practices. You will be expected to demonstrate ethics and values consistent with the Trial Court's mission, promote diversity, and provide excellent customer service to both court employees and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in servicing and replacing minor plumbing fixtures.
  • Perform minor electrical work not requiring a licensed electrician, such as replacing light bulbs and fuses.
  • Assist in minor carpentry and repair work.
  • Maintain machinery, equipment, and tools by cleaning, lubricating, greasing, and oiling to ensure optimum working order.
  • Apply paint, varnish, and stain to all types of surfaces using appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and make repairs to heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment according to instructions.
  • Maintain and make routine repairs to electrically powered equipment and appliances according to instructions from senior technicians.
  • Apply carpentry techniques to construct, alter, repair, and/or install walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, roofs, gutters, and locks.
  • Perform structural repair, alterations, or improvement work such as preparing surfaces for plaster or cement work.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of professional work experience performing general building repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge in a variety of trade areas common to the field of building maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the use and operation of hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Ability to climb and work on scaffolds and ladders.
  • Physical stamina and endurance.
  • For Maintenance Technician II: A minimum of two years' experience working at the entry level and competence in an area of specialization.

Nice-to-haves

  • Graduation from a vocational school with a trade or technical concentration is preferred.
  • The acquisition of a trade or technical license where applicable is preferred.
