About the position

The Contra Costa County Public Works Department (CCCPWD) is responsible for the maintenance and operation of over 650 miles of roads, 79 miles of streams and channels, and over 150 County buildings. CCCPWD services include parks and recreation, sandbag distribution, flood control, road and facilities maintenance, and storm water management. CCCPWD operates two airports, Buchanan Field Airport in Concord, and Byron Airport in Byron. CCCPWD strives for continuous improvement to deliver cost effective, safe reliable and sustainable projects, programs, and quality services. The Public Works Department has an organizational culture that strives for continuous improvement. The Contra Costa County Public Works Department is currently recruiting to fill multiple Maintenance Worker I vacancies. All interested and qualified individuals are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Performing routine heavy manual labor, as a member of a maintenance or clean-up crew
  • Using various electric or pneumatic powered tools in the performance of assigned work such as patching pavement, cutting and undergrowth from drainage channels along roadways
  • Loading and removing debris from homeless encampments, rights of way, and flood control facilitates
  • Assisting in keeping tools and equipment in working condition
  • Directing traffic by using proper M.U.T.C.D guidelines when construction work obstructs normal traffic routes

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License
  • Ability to perform strenuous, repetitive labor requiring manual dexterity, agility, and physical strength
  • Professional, reliable, and ethical behavior
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written work orders and instructions
  • Willingness to learn proper safety methods and perform work safely
  • Good time management skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Self-motivated

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with a computer and using basic office software
  • Experience operating or working around heavy equipment
  • Experience working with and applying road construction materials
  • Possession of a Class A drivers license with tank and combination endorsements
  • Experience using and/or applying pesticides and herbicides
  • Experience working in Emergency response
