About the position

The Maintenance Worker II - Landscape/Facilities position at the City of Fountain Valley involves performing a variety of manual, semi-skilled, and skilled tasks related to the construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation of public works, including streets, sidewalks, and traffic signs. This journey-level classification is characterized by the skilled maintenance tasks performed under general supervision. The incumbent will work under the general supervision of a Foreman and the Internal Services Supervisor or Public Services Supervisor. In the landscape assignment, the worker will be responsible for digging trenches and holes for irrigation systems, cleaning and grading landscaped areas, planting turf, shrubs, and trees, and assisting service contractors in maintaining city landscapes. The role also includes applying herbicides and fertilizers under oversight, responding to pest control issues, and maintaining traps in landscaped areas. When assigned to facilities, the worker will perform preventive and corrective maintenance tasks, which may include carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical work. Responsibilities include troubleshooting electrical problems, repairing and replacing fixtures, and assisting in the operation and minor repair of HVAC units. The worker will also monitor contractors, perform rough framing and finish work, and ensure compliance with safety regulations. The position requires the ability to operate various vehicles and equipment, maintain accurate logs, and perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Dig trenches and holes for irrigation systems and utilities.
  • Clean, rake, and grade landscaped areas.
  • Plant turf, shrubs, trees, and ground cover.
  • Assist service contractors in maintaining city landscapes.
  • Apply herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers under oversight.
  • Respond to pest control issues and maintain traps in landscaped areas.
  • Perform preventive and corrective building maintenance tasks including carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical work.
  • Troubleshoot electrical problems and repair fixtures.
  • Assist in the operation and minor repair of HVAC units.
  • Monitor contractors for task completion.
  • Perform rough framing and finish work in remodeling projects.
  • Install and repair doors, floors, and ceilings.
  • Prepare surfaces for painting and apply paint.
  • Repair and maintain playground equipment and other city structures.
  • Utilize a computerized maintenance management system for job-related tasks.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Two years of related experience in facilities maintenance, preferably in a municipal setting.
  • Knowledge of principles of construction, maintenance, and repair of public works.
  • Ability to operate a variety of vehicles and motorized equipment.
  • Strong customer service orientation and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Vocational/technical coursework in facilities/building maintenance/repair is highly desirable.
  • Building Operator certification is highly desirable.
