About the position

The Maintenance Worker II position at Humboldt County involves performing a variety of standard building and facility maintenance tasks, as well as minor repair duties in various buildings, facilities, and adjacent grounds. Under general supervision, the worker will interact with the public and provide standard information. The role requires the employee to drive a truck or other vehicle to transport personnel and/or equipment as needed. Work assignments will vary based on the season and specific projects assigned. The Maintenance Worker II is expected to perform duties of a Maintenance Worker I as required and will be on call when scheduled to perform job duties. This position is characterized as the working level class in the Maintenance Worker series, distinguished from the Maintenance Worker I class by the greater independence in performing duties under general supervision. The Maintenance Worker II is responsible for a wider variety of tools, equipment, and techniques, as well as a broader range of complex duties. Additionally, incumbents may act as job or project leaders for Maintenance Worker I staff and may assist in providing oversight and direction to volunteers, community service workers, or temporary/seasonal employees as required. The role includes responsibilities such as participating in the design and planning of remodeling and repair projects, estimating materials and tools needed for assignments, performing skilled and semi-skilled craft work in various systems, inspecting and maintaining mechanical and electrical equipment, supervising contracts and vendor work, and maintaining records of work performed. The worker will also be responsible for snow removal and ensuring safety at worksites. The position requires a commitment to representing the County with dignity and integrity in all relationships with staff and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the design, layout, and planning of remodeling and repair projects affecting County buildings and facilities.
  • Estimates materials, tools, and equipment needed for work assignments; orders and picks up materials and supplies from vendors.
  • Performs skilled and semi-skilled craft work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and carpentry systems.
  • Inspects boilers, HVAC equipment, plumbing, generators, pumps, and similar equipment; troubleshoots and repairs as required.
  • Performs general repairs such as drywall repair, painting, and fixing doors and fixtures.
  • Supervises contracts and work of vendors and subcontractors; inspects work and approves payment.
  • Repairs and installs doors and door hardware; changes and keys locks; installs security devices and performs carpentry work.
  • Maintains and services test equipment and hand and power tools; keeps inventory of supplies and hardware.
  • Maintains records of work performed and materials used.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service by offering suggestions and participating as a team member.
  • Performs snow removal and salting of facilities and access ways.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to activities.
  • Observes safe work methods and uses safety equipment; secures worksites from hazards.
  • Returns to work on short notice when scheduled to perform job duties.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and cooperation.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid driver's license or alternate means of travel.
  • Ability to pass a Sheriff's Office grade background check.
  • OSHA 10-Hour Construction Training certification within 15 days of employment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 years of skilled experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of building operating systems and facilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in supervising volunteers or community service workers.
  • Knowledge of advanced mechanical and electrical systems.
