About the position

The Maintenance Worker-Streets position at the City of Terrell involves performing a variety of technical repair, construction, and maintenance tasks related to city infrastructure and facilities. The role includes responsibilities in parks, streets, and water/wastewater maintenance, ensuring the upkeep and functionality of public spaces and utilities. The worker will operate various equipment and machinery, maintain cleanliness and safety standards, and report on daily activities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform repair and maintenance work on city-owned athletic fields, playground equipment, and swimming pools when assigned to Parks.
  • Maintain landscaping, flowerbeds, hedges, and lawns in assigned parks; mow grass and trim trees and shrubbery.
  • Clean and maintain public restroom facilities in city-operated parks, ensuring sanitation standards are met.
  • Haul equipment and supplies to job sites using department vehicles.
  • Sweep and clean assigned sidewalks in the downtown area.
  • Perform semi-skilled labor for the repair and maintenance of city streets, including pothole repairs and asphalt spreading when assigned to Streets.
  • Ensure cleanliness of tiles and haul gravel as needed.
  • Operate various equipment and machinery, including street sweepers and dump trucks.
  • Set up and remove traffic barricades and safety signs as needed.
  • Complete and submit daily reports on work performed.
  • Trim trees and mow rights-of-way and grass areas around signs as needed.
  • Maintain department equipment and machinery, lubricating parts and replacing accessories as needed.
  • Repair utility cuts into streets and clean the garage area when assigned to Streets.
  • Perform maintenance and repair work on water mains and service lines when assigned to Water/Wastewater.
  • Install water and sewer taps and operate a backhoe and jet truck as needed.
  • Read commercial and residential water meters and perform leak repairs.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of responsible maintenance, construction, or similar work experience is desirable.
  • Ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with horticultural maintenance and swimming pool maintenance.
  • Knowledge of traffic control and safety procedures.
  • Familiarity with operating a variety of hand tools and power tools.
