About the position

The Public Works Maintenance Worker position at the City of Melissa, Texas, is responsible for the efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems, as well as City streets. This role involves skilled manual labor, including the installation and repair of water and sewer lines, operating heavy equipment, and ensuring safe working conditions. The position requires availability for call-outs and on-call rotations, including evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Check and maintain equipment to ensure proper function.
  • Make water and sewer taps and install sewer clean outs.
  • Install, service, and upgrade water and wastewater mains and lines.
  • Install and repair sewer manholes.
  • Install valves and fire hydrants, and paint and maintain fire hydrants.
  • Install, change, and read water meters.
  • Raise, lower, repair, and replace meter boxes and valve boxes.
  • Locate breaks, leaks, and clogs in utility lines for repair.
  • Repair leaks in utility lines and excavate trenches for main placement.
  • Apply temporary patches to street surfaces following repairs.
  • Ensure safe operating conditions at the work site, including traffic hazards and required barricades.
  • Operate equipment such as backhoes, front end loaders, jet trucks, and dump trucks.
  • Repair potholes in City streets and parking lots.
  • Repair, replace, or install City street signs.
  • Coordinate with supervisor on material ordering and work plans.
  • Perform saw cutting and removal of material in City streets as needed.
  • Replace road material after excavation due to utility repairs.
  • Assist supervisor in all tasks as directed and serve as supplemental help for other departments as needed.
  • Attend safety training and meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year previous experience and/or training involving the plumbing trade or water/wastewater line repair, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License.
  • Preferred valid Texas CDL or the ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
  • Class D Water Operator License and Class D Wastewater License or the ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
  • Class C Water Operator License preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with heavy equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of City Employee Handbook and water/sewer maps.
