This position is part of a career development track that includes Maintenance Worker I, II, and III levels, allowing for growth based on qualifications and experience. Maintenance Workers are assigned to one of three crews: Right of Way, Pavement, or Stormwater, and are responsible for a variety of tasks that ensure the safety and functionality of public spaces. In this role, Maintenance Workers perform routine labor functions that include the construction and repair of streets, public walkways, and roadways. They are also involved in stormwater drainage construction and maintenance, which is crucial for preventing flooding and ensuring proper water flow. Workers are required to set up work zone traffic signs and other necessary signage to maintain safety during operations. Additionally, they are responsible for picking up debris and miscellaneous objects from streets and work sites, as well as mowing grass along public thoroughfares using various types of mowers. The position also involves operating and maintaining equipment. Maintenance Workers will operate manual or small powered equipment for street maintenance and drainage, as well as larger vehicles such as one-ton and 2 ½ ton trucks to transport materials and equipment. Routine preventative maintenance and minor repairs on department vehicles and motorized equipment are also part of the job responsibilities. Emergency operations are a critical aspect of this role, as Maintenance Workers are expected to respond to snow removal and ice control operations, as well as other emergency situations such as natural disasters. This may require working during off-duty times, including nights and weekends, to ensure public safety during adverse conditions. Responsibilities

  • Perform routine duties in the construction and repair of streets, public walkways, and roadways.
  • Conduct stormwater drainage construction and maintenance.
  • Set up work zone traffic signs and other necessary signage.
  • Pick up debris and miscellaneous objects on streets and at work sites.
  • Mow grass along public thoroughfares using hand mowers, tractor mowers, or riding mowers.
  • Operate manual or small powered equipment for street maintenance and drainage.
  • Operate one-ton and 2 ½ ton trucks to haul materials and equipment to and from job sites.
  • Load and unload materials and equipment from trucks.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance and minor repairs on department vehicles and motorized equipment.
  • Respond to snow removal and ice control operations during emergency situations.
  • Maintain records, reports, and other necessary documents.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A with air brakes and tanker endorsements (or ability to obtain within 180 days of employment).
  • Previous construction and/or maintenance experience is a plus.
  • For Maintenance Worker II: A minimum of 4 years work experience in construction and/or maintenance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with emergency operations such as snow removal and ice control.
  • Knowledge of public infrastructure maintenance practices.
