About the position

The Major Gifts Officer at Covenant House California is responsible for executing the agency's development strategy focused on major individual donors, specifically those contributing $5,000 and above. This role aims to enhance the sustainability of the agency by developing strategic plans to engage and steward donors, thereby securing necessary resources to support the mission of assisting youth experiencing homelessness and human trafficking in California.

Responsibilities

  • Create and execute strategic donor engagement plans tailored to major individual donors.
  • Maintain/grow a portfolio of 100-150 major donors with a high-volume schedule of personal contacts and involvement activities.
  • Design personalized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies to retain and upgrade donors.
  • Prepare and present proposals for major gifts, including drafting tailored appeals and supporting materials.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership for high-level solicitations.
  • Work closely with development, communications, and program teams to align major gift efforts with overall agency goals.
  • Implement activities outlined in the development plan including donor relations and major gift campaigns.
  • Participate in planning the agency's individual donor development strategy to inform strategic activities.
  • Work strategically alongside Programs and Community Involvement teams to deepen ongoing donor engagement.
  • Design and manage agency special events including major annual fundraising events and donor receptions.
  • Meet an agreed-upon annual revenue goal and quarterly benchmarks.
  • Maintain meticulous attention to donor database and record keeping in Raiser's Edge.
  • Promote program objectives and provide ongoing communication and support to the CDO.
  • Liaison with Community Involvement and Program team members to enhance agency support and prospect pools.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred (equivalent experience considered).
  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible fundraising experience, particularly in Major Gift programs development and implementation.
  • Verifiable experience in managing a substantial portfolio and solicitation of five and six-figure gifts.
  • Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in philanthropy and major gifts.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to shift priorities as needed.
  • Confidentiality, strong personal and professional integrity, team-building skills, tactfulness, and good judgment.
  • Self-motivated with a joyful spirit and ability to work independently to achieve benchmarks.
  • Highly organized with multitasking abilities and capacity to incorporate feedback from team members.
  • Proficient in Microsoft software programs and able to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and writing skills.
  • Knowledge of and deep empathy for homelessness and youth development issues.
