About the position

The Major and Planned Gifts Officer is a key member of the Advancement team at Chautauqua Institution, responsible for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting donors to enhance philanthropic resources. This role involves managing a portfolio of major and planned gift donors, developing marketing strategies, and coordinating fundraising efforts to support the Institution's initiatives and endowment growth.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of 120 major and planned gift donors and prospective donors.
  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward supporters, including planned giving donors.
  • Engage with donors through face-to-face or video visits, email, and phone calls.
  • Develop written proposals, gift illustrations, and other donor communications as needed.
  • Assist in developing and executing planned giving marketing strategies.
  • Coordinate activities among Advancement and Institution leadership and program staff.
  • Document donor contacts in Raiser's Edge and provide regular reports on activity.
  • Support the Planned Giving Advisory Council as needed.
  • Participate in donor events as required.
  • Assist in developing the annual budget for the major and planned gifts team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Five or more years of experience in prospect management, donor cultivation, and solicitation or comparable experience in estate, tax, or financial planning.
  • Experience with Raiser's Edge or other CRM software.
  • Experience with Crescendo or PG Calc planned gift illustrating software.
  • Thorough knowledge of gift planning techniques and principles.
  • Experience identifying, cultivating, and directly soliciting major and planned gifts.
  • Understanding of tax guidelines governing charitable gifts.
  • Ability to interact effectively with volunteers, leaders, and program partners.
  • Ability to oversee multiple projects and discern complex interests quickly.
  • Technical proficiency with basic office software (e.g., Office 365, Raiser's Edge, and gift illustration software).
  • Experience guiding and motivating volunteers.
