About the position

The Manager, Accounting plays a crucial role in overseeing the compensation and benefits accounting operations on a global scale, ensuring that all financial and operational internal controls are effectively managed. This position is ideally based in Boston, MA or Durham, NC, but offers the flexibility of remote work within the Eastern Standard Time zone. In this role, the Manager will be responsible for reviewing journal entries and ensuring that all necessary support documentation is provided. Timely processing of these entries is essential, as is the resolution of any reconciling items for each accounting period. The Manager will also ensure the accurate and timely recording of payroll and bank transactions to the General Ledger (G/L), which includes managing month-end and quarter-end payroll and benefits accruals. Analyzing the accuracy of final payroll in the G/L and related balance sheet accounts is a key responsibility, with monthly reporting on the accuracy of results and explanations for any significant fluctuations. The Manager will oversee monthly close activities, which involve preparing accrual estimates, reconciling balance sheet accounts, and conducting various analytical reviews. Maintaining a robust, SOX-compliant internal control structure is critical, and the Manager will be expected to recommend process improvements that align with industry standards and best practices. Effective communication with external and internal auditors, the FP&A team, global payroll team, and tax specialists is essential for success in this role. Additionally, the Manager will be responsible for hiring, coaching, mentoring, and developing senior accountants on the accounting team, inspiring them to achieve excellence. Other duties may include completing ad-hoc analyses as directed by the Director and other Finance department members, as well as supporting the design, testing, and implementation of new global payroll systems.

Responsibilities

  • Review journal entries and provide appropriate support documentation.
  • Ensure timely processing and resolve all reconciling items for each accounting period.
  • Ensure accurate and timely recording of payroll and bank transactions to the G/L, including month-end and quarter-end payroll and benefits accruals.
  • Analyze the accuracy of final payroll in the G/L and related balance sheet accounts, reporting monthly on accuracy and explaining any large or unusual fluctuations.
  • Review reconciliations monthly for balance sheet accounts.
  • Manage monthly close activities, including preparing accrual estimates and reconciling balance sheet accounts.
  • Maintain and monitor an effective, SOX compliant internal control structure and recommend process improvements.
  • Communicate effectively with external/internal auditors, FP&A, global payroll team, and tax specialists.
  • Hire, coach, mentor, and develop senior accountant(s) on the accounting team.
  • Complete various other ad-hoc analyses as directed by the Director and other members of the Finance department.
  • Develop and refine detailed work procedures as needed.
  • Support the design, testing, and implementation of new global payroll systems.

Requirements

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree and 5 years of accounting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Active CPA License required.
  • Experience working in a publicly traded company (global experience preferred but not required).
  • Experience working in a Big 4 accounting firm required (preferably at least 3 years).
  • Strong understanding of general accounting standards and principles.
  • Previous hands-on experience owning payroll accounting monthly close preferred.
  • Ability to handle confidential information, maintaining data security in accordance with data privacy and security policies and regulations (GDPR).
  • Results-driven, team-oriented member/leader that is highly organized, detail-oriented, and thorough with an exceptional ability to follow projects through to completion.
  • Articulate and professional with excellent people skills, a positive attitude, and a strong work ethic.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office and financial accounting software (Oracle Fusion preferred). Familiarity with UKG, CloudPay or other payroll systems reporting capability preferred.
