About the position

The Manager of Automation & Controls (SCADA) at American Water is responsible for overseeing the performance and efficiency of the Automation & Control Systems. This role involves managing direct reports and ensuring the secure and reliable operation of all policies and practices related to automation and process control systems. The manager will provide planning and day-to-day support, project management, and ensure overall satisfaction with performance within their division. They will also manage or provide input to the CAPEX Recurring Project budgets and collaborate with operational and functional departments to ensure that the state and local automation and process control systems strategies and master plans are progressing as planned. In addition to managing the automation and process control system projects, the manager will coordinate and develop education and training for team members and others. They will implement knowledge sharing and continuous improvement activities, investigate and pilot new technological systems, and ensure quality compliance in all automation and process control systems. The role requires providing expert assistance with planning and designing timely, cost-effective modernization projects. Key accountabilities include managing the staff and activities of the division's control team, coordinating maintenance activities on automation and process control equipment, and participating in the development and implementation of automation and process control systems strategies, policies, and practices. The manager will also create and manage the departmental OPEX budget, establish quality compliance checks, and research and recommend systems to enhance functionality and reliability. This position requires building and maintaining relationships with functional and operating organizations to address automation and control needs and plans, ensuring that support is in place for operational requirements and training needs of local associates.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Minimum five (5) years management experience in technical support and project management.
  • Experience with instrumentation, automation, and process control system hardware and software design.
  • Four-year (4) degree or equivalent in a related field.
  • Demonstrative knowledge of engineering concepts and their application in water/wastewater systems.
  • Working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation in automation systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with data communications systems and protocols.
  • Knowledge of OPC, Visual Basic, and SQL applications.
  • Strong knowledge of project management methodologies and tools.
