About the position

Under the general leadership of the department head, manages all aspects of operating and maintaining the campus's 2,100-ton Central Chiller Plant, approximately four miles of underground chilled water loop piping, and the campus Building Automation System connected to over 50 buildings. These systems are mission critical to the around-the-clock operation of the DeLand campus and therefore must be monitored and controlled around the clock 365 days a year to provide uninterrupted service to campus buildings.

Responsibilities

  • Manages operations and maintenance of Central Chiller Plant and all associated equipment.
  • Ensures the plant is operational at all times 24 hours a day 365 days a year and must be able to respond immediately to resolve any unexpected operational issues that disrupt service to campus buildings.
  • Manages chemical water treatment of chillers, cooling towers, and the chilled water loop.
  • Manages the campus-wide underground chilled water piping loop, including locating leaks and overseeing repairs and new additions.
  • Manages the day-to-day functionality and programming of the Automated Logic Building Automation System (BAS) for the Central Chiller Plant and all buildings connected to the control system.
  • Manages and maintains the network connecting all buildings on the BAS system.
  • Provides technical support necessary to ensure the appropriate application, installation, funding, and utilization of modern energy conservation technologies.
  • Manages energy consumption of the Central Chiller Plant and seeks ways to reduce consumption.
  • Serves as a back-up to the Manager of Energy Conservation & Sustainability for scheduling occupancy in the BAS.
  • Actively monitors campus BAS to ensure all operating parameters are being met.
  • Manages service contracts for monthly and annual chiller service, water treatment, and the like.
  • Identifies potentially unsafe operation conditions and implements remedial action.
  • Identifies and prioritizes capital renewal needs to assist in developing the annual capital renewal budget.
  • Takes a lead role in supporting campus renovation and building projects.
  • Provides technical support for skilled and trade staff in the operations and maintenance of HVAC equipment across campus.
  • Participates in training, maintains the skills necessary to utilize best practices, and participates on quality improvement teams as assigned.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with fellow employees, students, and the university community.
  • Abides by and complies with university policies and procedures.
  • Performs special and other assignments as directed.

Requirements

  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions in English.
  • Ability to utilize computers on a daily basis to respond to emails, write reports, create spreadsheets, and so forth.
  • Ability to read blueprints and technical construction specifications.
  • Must have advanced level of knowledge and skill utilization Automated Logic WebCTRL software.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Must be available to respond remotely or in person at all times to respond to emergencies.
  • Knowledge of energy management and related control system technology and best practices.
  • Knowledge of the various LAN system types used for BAS systems.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration.
  • Clean understanding of a psychometric chart, properties of air, and ability to make air flow calculations.
  • Skill in troubleshooting complex problems on large projects.
  • Skill in the use of hand tools, power tools, and a variety of testing equipment.
  • Ability to apply recognized standards of good practice relevant to matters of safety and security.
  • Ability to effectively plan and coordinate multi-task requirements.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, students and university community.
  • Ability to walk and climb stairs.
  • Ability to work in environments with extreme temperature and humidity.
