About the position

The Manager of Community Credit Risk Management at Synovus is responsible for overseeing a team dedicated to underwriting and managing portfolios of relationships with a total Synovus Relationship Exposure (TSRE) of $2.5 million or more. This role serves as the first line of defense for the Community Bank's credit risk organization, ensuring that all credit activities align with the Synovus risk framework. The manager will direct the team's activities, focusing on the underwriting and structuring of new and renewed credit opportunities, while also providing ongoing credit servicing, monitoring portfolios, and identifying problem loans. The position requires a player/coach mentality, where the manager actively participates in underwriting and portfolio management tasks alongside their team. In this role, the manager will monitor existing credit relationships on a scheduled basis to identify any issues or concerns. They will collaborate closely with Community Bankers to manage proposed credit requests from clients, recommending appropriate credit structures and ensuring the quality and profitability of the assigned portfolio. Adherence to Synovus's credit risk philosophy, risk appetite, and lending strategies is paramount. The manager will also serve as an additional point of contact for clients, maintaining a high level of responsiveness and communication. The manager will be responsible for assessing credit issues, performance, and industry trends, providing recommendations to improve credit structures and mitigate risks. They will work closely with senior management to implement policies, procedures, and process changes effectively. Additionally, the manager will hold team members accountable for performance goals and partner with Community Banking leadership to achieve satisfactory ratings from Credit Review and external regulators. This includes meeting targets for annual reviews, risk ratings, and compliance monitoring, as well as fostering strong relationships with key stakeholders across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and monitor a team responsible for underwriting and portfolio management for relationships with TSRE of $2.5MM+.
  • Assess credit issues, performance, and industry trends, providing recommendations to improve structure and mitigate risks.
  • Work closely with the Senior Manager to implement policies, procedures, and process changes.
  • Ensure underwriting and portfolio management deadlines are met by the team.
  • Communicate with Division CEOs and Market Executives to meet expectations related to underwriting and portfolio management.
  • Manage workflows and reallocate work as needed, staying up-to-date on pipeline.
  • Hold team members accountable for performance goals.
  • Partner with Community Banking leadership to achieve satisfactory ratings from Credit Review and external regulators.
  • Conduct analysis and structuring of credit requests for clients and prospects.
  • Develop client assessments including in-depth analyses of financial data and other information provided by the client.
  • Conduct projection modeling, stress testing, and other analyses using research and evaluations from various sources.
  • Prepare and present quarterly and annual risk reviews and tiering analyses.
  • Collaborate with Bankers and other business teams to drive and own the renewal process, engaging with clients to understand future business objectives and credit-related needs.
  • Monitor tickler and exception reports to manage financial reporting and client compliance with covenants.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Seven years of experience in commercial lending, loan structuring, credit analysis, underwriting, and portfolio management.
  • Three years of experience in a team management/leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of credit and risk principles, mitigating factors, and banking policies and procedures.
  • Ability to manage relationships with key stakeholders and present complex ideas in an organized manner.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
