Full-time - Manager

About the position

The Manager of Design Engineering at EssilorLuxottica leads a team responsible for delivering innovative mechanical solutions for eyewear and goggle categories. This role combines management and engineering design, focusing on collaboration with cross-functional partners to enhance product functionality and consumer experience while ensuring manufacturability.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage the execution of the Design Engineering function.
  • Enable employee engagement, provide guidance and motivation, and promote objective thinking and teamwork.
  • Build strong partnerships with leaders in Design, Quality, Advanced Concepts, and Product Development Engineering.
  • Partner with peer leaders to drive alignment, leading negotiations and tradeoffs where needed.
  • Support project planning by providing technical input on timelines, scope, resource capacity, and complexity.
  • Track and communicate project status, escalating issues and driving resolution.
  • Deliver novel mechanisms and proven solutions that merge design, functionality, premium consumer experience, and manufacturability.
  • Reinforce Design Thinking as a core way-of-working, using rapid ideate/prototype/test loops to inject creativity, refine designs and build confidence in the best solutions.
  • Verify performance, fit, comfort, and durability of new designs using FEA, mechanical testing, and user testing.

Requirements

  • BS in Engineering or similar.
  • 5+ years engineering experience.
  • 1+ years of people management experience.
  • Strong organizational, people, verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to coach team members.
  • Strong presentation skills; experience presenting to non-technical partners and executive leaders.
  • Experience with project/program management; negotiation skillset.
  • Experience with consumer goods product development, including partnering with designers.
  • Ability to model components and assemblies in CAD software.
  • Broad experience with manufacturing processes, specifically injection molding, and associated design constraints.
  • Hands-on fabrication of prototypes using 3D printing and manual methods.
  • Experience conducting mechanical testing and sample evaluation.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Design Thinking-ability to put 'fail fast learn faster' into practice.

Nice-to-haves

  • Multi-industry experience with a focus in consumer products.
  • Manufacturing experience troubleshooting processing or assembly challenges, ideally at a manufacturing center.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals, including material stress/strain, failure root cause analysis, and cantilever beam mechanics; experience designing and troubleshooting cam hinges, linkages, ratchets, locking mechanisms, etc.
  • Experience with polymers, injection molding, die casting, forming, and CNC operations.
  • CAD proficiency in large assemblies and complex surface modeling, CREO ideal.
  • Experience with structural FEA, impact simulation, mold flow, CFD, and/or kinematic simulation.
  • Experience with wearable or consumer electronics product design.
  • Experience with field testing with end-users in various environments.
  • Passion for and participation in one or more of our core sports-cycling, ski/snowboard, team sports, etc.
