About the position

The Manager, Digital Post Production position at Emerson College is a pivotal role that reports directly to the Director of Post Production Facilities. This position is responsible for managing the digital post-production facilities on campus, ensuring that all hardware, software, and suggested workflows are current and capable of supporting robust and academically impressive post-production classes. The role requires a high level of technical expertise and the ability to provide support to both students and faculty who are working with Non-Linear Editing (NLE) software. In this role, the manager will oversee the operation and maintenance of the Digital Post Production facilities that support the Visual and Media Arts (VMA) curriculum. This includes providing advanced technical support for students and faculty across all levels of VMA coursework, addressing workflow-related and technical inquiries as they arise. The manager will also communicate with faculty to understand the curriculum's needs, researching and implementing new hardware, software, and workflows to meet these requirements. Additionally, the manager will be responsible for troubleshooting technical problems and user errors in various software applications, including Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, and Avid Media Composer. The position also involves managing hardware in the Mac Pro labs and suites, which includes troubleshooting equipment such as Blackmagic UltraStudio hardware, broadcast monitors, speakers, audio equipment, Wacom tablets, and other peripherals. The manager will assist students and faculty in the Emerging Media Lab when the EML manager is unavailable, hire and train a team of student employees, and oversee their daily operations to support classes, equipment checkouts, and basic troubleshooting measures. Furthermore, the manager will maintain and update the Post Production website, create new articles based on frequently asked questions, and produce video tutorials to enhance existing resources. Coordination of screenings for MFA and BA thesis projects, BA Capstone projects, and other VMA courses will also be part of the responsibilities, serving as a liaison between all parties involved in these events.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, operate, and maintain the Digital Post Production facilities supporting the VMA curriculum.
  • Provide advanced technical expertise and support for students and faculty in all levels of VMA coursework.
  • Communicate with faculty to understand curriculum needs and implement new hardware, software, and workflows.
  • Research upgrades and replacements to maintain compatibility with emerging operating systems and hardware.
  • Troubleshoot technical problems and user errors in software used, including Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Davinci Resolve, and Avid Media Composer.
  • Troubleshoot hardware in the Mac Pro labs and suites, including Blackmagic UltraStudio hardware and various peripheral equipment.
  • Assist Emerging Media Lab students and faculty when the EML manager is unavailable.
  • Hire, train, and oversee a team of student employees for class support and equipment checkouts.
  • Maintain and update the Post Production website, ensuring content is current.
  • Create new articles and video tutorials to support students and faculty.
  • Coordinate and organize screenings for MFA and BA thesis projects and other VMA courses.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Film or Video Post-Production required.
  • 1-3 years of experience in a professional digital post-production environment, including training in various NLE software, video codecs, and exhibition formats required.
  • Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail required.
  • Advanced knowledge of Non-Linear Editing software and professional editing workflows.
  • Ability to support 4K+/Proxy workflows, motion graphics, color correction, and XML/AAF-based workflows.
  • Ability to support a variety of video codecs in software, including Adobe Creative Cloud, Avid Media Composer, and DaVinci Resolve.
  • Advanced understanding of Mac OS, as well as familiarity with Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of screenings and exhibition formats and Digital Cinema Packages.
  • Basic knowledge of HTML, website design, UX, and UI.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to follow through on tasks and requests.
  • Ability to maintain multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks.
  • Self-starter with excellent interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
