About the position

Leonardo DRS Land Systems is seeking a full-time Embedded Software Engineering Manager for our Bridgeton, MO facility. This role is pivotal in supervising and developing a team of software engineers, ensuring that activities are completed on time and within budget. The software group is responsible for the design, development, analysis, documentation, and support testing of products, systems, or subsystems. The position requires the ability to independently complete technical projects while also mentoring and coaching other engineers. As the Embedded Software Engineering Manager, you will manage and supervise the work of a software engineering team that drives technology through design, development, analysis, documentation, and support testing of various products and systems. You will be responsible for developing and performance managing the software group, managing budget, cost, and schedule inputs, and continuously improving engineering practices to support efficiency, reliability, and serviceability goals. You will also review customer specifications and requirements, develop designs that support them, and apply your technical expertise to lead the team through complex embedded design problems. In addition, you will be tasked with developing a strong technical platform vision that encourages team members to build configuration-driven platform tools, driving program design to cost, documenting component and subsystem specifications, and participating in proposal preparations. You will work closely with staff to conceptualize systems and software technical designs, support technical engineering activities, and participate in the resolution of technical issues both within the company and with outside suppliers. Your role will also involve mentoring and coaching team members, supervising the group independently, and communicating work priorities effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise the work of a software engineering team responsible for driving technology through design, development, analysis, documentation, and support testing of products, systems, or subsystems.
  • Develop and performance manage the software group.
  • Manage budget, cost, and schedule input and design assignments for the software department.
  • Continuously improve engineering practices for the software platform to support efficiency, reliability, and serviceability goals.
  • Review customer specifications and requirements, and develop designs to best support them, including cost as a key design variable.
  • Apply technical expertise to lead the software engineering team through solving complex embedded design problems.
  • Develop a strong technical platform vision that encourages team members to build configuration-driven platform tools to allow the principles of the team to scale throughout the organization.
  • Drive the program design to cost and design.
  • Document component and subsystem specifications requirements.
  • Participate in preparation of proposals.
  • Responsible for completion of assigned tasks on time and meeting technical requirements.
  • Work closely with staff to conceptualize systems and software technical designs.
  • Support and participate in technical engineering support activities, such as design reviews.
  • Perform the design, development, modification, analysis, and/or documentation of various software systems.
  • Participate in resolution of technical issues within the company and outside suppliers.
  • Attend and participate in appropriate engineering, customer, or business meetings.
  • Mentor and/or coach either within or outside of direct staff.
  • Supervise a group independently, provide assistance to staff; communicate work priorities; verify accuracy of work and engineering employee development.
  • Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and customers as required.
  • Support, communicate, reinforce, and defend the mission, values, and culture of the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering or related technical field with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated people and technical leadership capabilities.
  • Proven Computer Science fundamentals in embedded development, algorithm design, problem solving, and complexity analysis.
  • Experience in one of the following: C, C++, C# and/or Java.
  • Experience taking a leading role in building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers.
  • Experience influencing software engineering best practices within the team.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Strong mentor of peers and subordinates.
  • Experience with Linux/Unix is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a Department of Defense (DoD) Secret Clearance is required.
