About the position

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Manager Energy Accounting within the Office of Controller team. This role is pivotal in directing and overseeing back office operations and the monthly closing process to ensure accuracy and completeness in gas, power, and derivative transactions. The Manager will be responsible for the documentation, evaluation, and accounting of derivative contracts in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). This includes evaluating variable interest entities and lease obligations related to energy resource acquisitions or structures. The Manager will also research and communicate changes in derivative accounting and variable interest entities accounting to management, ensuring compliance with SOX procedures and controls. Continuous improvement of processes is a key focus, as is overseeing the accounting staff and maintaining the general ledger system for energy-related accounts. The role requires collaboration with external auditors to ensure compliance with GAAP related to energy accounting, derivative accounting, and variable interest entities evaluations. Additionally, the Manager will provide guidance and leadership to accountants, uphold safety compliance standards, and promote a culture of total safety within the organization. The position also emphasizes ethical conduct in business operations, ensuring that all duties are performed in accordance with regulatory compliance obligations.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and oversee back office operations and the monthly closing process for gas, power, and derivative transactions.
  • Document, evaluate, and account for derivative contracts in accordance with GAAP.
  • Evaluate variable interest entities and lease obligations related to energy resource acquisitions or structures.
  • Research and communicate changes in derivative accounting and variable interest entities accounting to management.
  • Ensure compliance with SOX procedures and controls and promote continual improvement of processes.
  • Oversee accounting staff and maintain the general ledger system for energy-related accounts.
  • Collaborate with external auditors to ensure compliance with GAAP related to energy accounting, derivative accounting, and variable interest entities evaluations.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to accountants and conduct performance reviews.
  • Promote a culture of safety and ensure adherence to safety standards and legal compliance requirements.
  • Troubleshoot accounting process flow and data integrity issues for smooth departmental operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, or accounting plus 8 years of relevant experience; or Certified Public Accountant designation with 5 years relevant experience at a major Public Accounting firm.
  • Proven extensive knowledge of U.S. GAAP, PCAOB standards, technical accounting, and financial reporting standards.
  • Strong technical accounting and analysis skills.
  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills to explain risk reports to diverse groups.
  • Familiarity with dynamic portfolio risk analysis and risk management techniques.
  • Strong leadership, mentorship, and coaching skills.
  • Demonstrated strong organization skills.
