About the position

The Engineering Manager at Starburst will lead and scale a growing engineering team responsible for developing a SaaS-based open data lakehouse platform. This role focuses on building a motivated team, driving the vision for data governance, and ensuring operational excellence while fostering a culture of growth and fun within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a team of passionate engineers.
  • Provide support and guidance to enable the team to self-organize and achieve sustained high velocity and predictability.
  • Drive and deliver the vision for data governance covering authentication, authorization, and compliance aspects of the platform.
  • Help employees grow through career development, coaching, and mentoring.
  • Define personal development plans, set goals, perform evaluations, and collaborate with employees on their objectives.
  • Ensure employees are enjoying their work.
  • Own, operate, and maintain your team's services.
  • Employ Agile methodologies to continuously deliver value to customers.
  • Enhance and maintain a rotating on-call incident escalation and response process.
  • Represent your team's operational maturity to Starburst's executives and product teams.
  • Collaborate on roadmaps with Product Managers, Architects, and Tech Leads to ensure clear direction and priorities.
  • Act as an ambassador for Starburst, recruiting and motivating top talent.

Requirements

  • Track record of leading distributed systems engineering and operations teams in software companies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in building and running a platform at scale (billions of events/week) either on-premise or in public cloud.
  • Specific expertise in highly available data architectures across multiple availability zones.
  • Prior experience in building enterprise security features.
  • Passion for engineering hygiene and operational excellence.
  • Familiarity with agile processes, continuous integration, and test automation.
  • Strategic thinking related to scale and automation.
  • Ability to distill complex situations into actionable plans.
  • Customer-centric approach to service development.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with cloud-based solutions and architectures.
  • Knowledge of data lake and analytics platforms.
  • Familiarity with compliance and regulatory requirements in data governance.
