About the position

The Manager, External Reporting & Technical Accounting at Newell Brands plays a crucial role in supporting the company's financial filing process with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This position is integral to ensuring compliance with SEC regulations and U.S. GAAP accounting standards. The individual will report directly to the Director of Technical Accounting and will have indirect reporting responsibilities to the Director of External Reporting. The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders across the organization to address SEC reporting matters and provide technical accounting support. In this position, the manager will be responsible for the planning, coordination, and preparation of the company's SEC filings, including 10-K, 10-Q, and 8-K Earnings Release Tables. Staying current with emerging SEC guidelines and new accounting standards is essential to assess their potential impact on the company's consolidated financial statements. The manager will also prepare quarterly and annual disclosure checklists and support the External Reporting team in liaising with Investor Relations, Treasury, and Legal functions. This includes assisting with earnings documents, debt offerings, analyst presentation materials, and Board of Directors presentations. Additionally, the manager will provide support to the Sustainability & Climate function regarding various ESG disclosure regimes, ensuring the implementation of appropriate internal controls. The role also involves specialized accounting areas such as impairment assessments, pension accounting, share-based compensation, and lease accounting. The manager will gain exposure to technical accounting consultations and support external auditors by preparing necessary schedules and responding to inquiries. A strong emphasis on internal control policies and procedures is required, along with collaboration with key stakeholders to support departmental initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Support the planning, coordination, and preparation of the Company's SEC filings (10-K, 10-Q, 8-K Earnings Release Tables)
  • Keep up-to-date on emerging SEC guidelines and new and proposed U.S. GAAP accounting standards to determine the potential disclosure implications to the Company's consolidated financial statements
  • Prepare quarterly and annual disclosure checklists
  • Support the External Reporting team to liaise with the Investor Relations, Treasury and Legal functions
  • Prepare quarterly management book provided to senior management
  • Provide support to the Sustainability & Climate function with respect to various ESG disclosure regimes
  • Provide support as needed surrounding specialized accounting areas including impairment assessments, pension accounting, share-based compensation, and lease accounting
  • Gain exposure to technical accounting consultations by providing support to the Director of Technical Accounting
  • Support the external auditors, including the preparation of PBCs and responding to inquiries
  • Support and adhere to strong internal control policies and procedures, including identifying areas for improvement that support efficient and timely SEC filing
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to support department initiatives

Requirements

  • 8+ years of relevant accounting experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting
  • Certified Public Accountant
  • Big Four public accounting experience with comprehensive hands-on working expertise of U.S. GAAP and SEC reporting
  • Strong decision making and problem-solving skills with ability to prioritize
  • Highly motivated, self-starter with a commitment to quality and integrity

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines required
  • Ability to network and collaborate cross-functionally
  • Prior experience with HFM, SAP and Workiva experience strongly preferred
