About the position

The Manager, Facilities Alterations, Operations & Maintenance oversees the Facilities Alterations, Operations and Maintenance Department, ensuring the safe and reliable operation of facilities while complying with state, local, and federal regulations. This role involves managing various services including building automation, energy management, and mechanical systems, while also providing support to research departments and coordinating mechanical contracting services.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes department goals, determines priorities, implements plans, monitors progress and modifies plans for the group.
  • Prepares, establishes, and monitors budgets, schedules, staffing levels, and material costs.
  • Performs general management activities such as recruiting, selecting, promoting, compensating, appraising and terminating staff within the one-over-one approval process.
  • Provides leadership and coaching to direct and motivate staff and counsels staff on job-related matters.
  • Directs activities for maintenance, craft, construction, and operations personnel, ensuring work is integrated with site operations and performed safely.
  • Develops and implements an effective preventive maintenance program using the site's computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Advises management and staff on services provided by the group and suggests corrective actions for facilities problems.
  • Searches for, creates and applies new methods, techniques or processes to improve efficiency of operations.
  • Directs energy management activities to promote energy conservation and ensure maximum return on investment.
  • Oversees utility budgets and coordinates energy conservation and sustainability initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering; 10 years of applicable experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field.
  • Experience in facility related operations in a laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to guide, direct and manage business and operation activities.
  • Knowledge of general business planning and administration, project management, quality assurance, and environmental, safety and health policies and procedures.
  • Thorough engineering knowledge of technical and regulatory requirements for a laboratory operation.
  • Experience and expertise in energy management including purchasing fuel, electricity, and using computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Proven capability to establish effective working relationships within a matrixed organization.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including team-building skills.
  • Refined oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret clearance.
