About the position

The Manager of Facility Based Coding at Lehigh Valley Health Network is responsible for overseeing hospital-based coding operations across the network. This role involves managing and mentoring both internal and contracted staff, ensuring productivity and coding quality, and implementing various coding and healthcare technologies. The manager will also handle coding denials, administer monitoring and auditing programs, and design educational plans to support compliance and revenue cycle goals.

Responsibilities

  • Manage hospital-based coding operations across the network.
  • Mentor internal and contracted staff, focusing on productivity and coding quality.
  • Implement and utilize various coding and healthcare technologies.
  • Anticipate and resolve barriers to achieve compliance and revenue cycle goals.
  • Administer the monitoring and auditing program; design and conduct coding educational plans.
  • Implement and manage revenue cycle initiatives and handle coding denials.
  • Assist with capital and operational budgets, benchmarking, and analysis of metrics.
  • Direct functions, activities, and workflows to ensure revenue targets are achieved.
  • Maintain focus on monitoring DNFC to support cash flow for network operations.
  • Develop and document uniform coding processes and guidelines across the network.
  • Ensure communication and education of coding processes to direct reports.
  • Direct staff resources for optimal efficiency and productivity.
  • Project staffing needs and proactively plan for resources to meet workload demands.
  • Build and maintain a culture of coding compliance across the network.
  • Encourage staff to code in a compliant manner that reflects patient case mix severity.
  • Ensure coding practices optimize facility revenue within compliance standards.
  • Hire, onboard, evaluate, discipline, and terminate staff as necessary.
  • Monitor productivity and quality metrics, coaching staff towards optimal efficiency.
  • Participate in documentation improvement activities and denial mediation.
  • Orient, educate, and develop coding staff on regulation and policy changes.
  • Serve as a resource for staff and physicians, liaising with other hospital departments.
  • Collaboratively communicate with colleagues across the network regarding departmental processes and outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate and complete coded data critical to healthcare delivery and reimbursement.
  • Resolve complex issues involving staffing, workflow, and information systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in HIM, informatics, healthcare administration, or other healthcare related field.
  • 5 years of experience in acute care or provider-based setting in coding and classification systems.
  • 3 years of experience in a management capacity.
  • Expert knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT coding, classification guidelines, and regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology.
  • Ability to interpret documentation and reconcile ambiguous information.
  • Demonstrated skills in AR management and use of technology and coding applications.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office and other applications.
  • Excellent presentation skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in a healthcare related field.
  • Knowledge of and ability to defend documentation against payer denials.
  • Ability to manage coding staff within a large academic healthcare system.
  • Knowledge of provider-based coding guidelines.
  • Experience in Epic and Computer Assisted Coding applications.
  • RHIA - Registered Health Information Administrator certification.
  • CDIP - Clinical Documentation Improvement certification.
