About the position

The Manager, Hardware Engineering at Alertus is responsible for leading a small team of engineers in the development and improvement of innovative life safety solutions. This role combines leadership with technical expertise, requiring the manager to actively participate in product development while guiding and mentoring team members. The position emphasizes collaboration across departments to ensure successful project outcomes and product transitions to production.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a small team of engineers to achieve complex project design goals.
  • Design, prototype, and document hardware solutions, which may be standalone or part of larger systems.
  • Create necessary documentation for production transfer, including bills of materials, assembly instructions, test plans, and user documentation.
  • Collaborate with QA to ensure product developments meet requirements for production readiness.
  • Provide high-level technical assistance to sales teams for existing and legacy products.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 8+ years of hands-on product and system design experience.
  • Proven experience in a management role within an engineering team.
  • Experience with digital and analog design techniques for volume production.
  • Electrical design experience using schematic capture tools.
  • Experience designing multilayer and controlled impedance PCBs.
  • Design experience with mixed voltage systems and various serial protocols.
  • Experience with prototype debug tools such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
  • Working experience with embedded firmware development and repository systems.
  • Ability to influence project outputs and timelines through task prioritization and risk mitigation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience designing products that integrate into larger systems.
  • Knowledge of network device operation and infrastructure.
  • Experience collaborating with Industrial Designers on product enclosures.
  • Experience with low power and battery-powered design concepts.
  • Working knowledge of techniques to reduce EMI/ESD issues.
  • Experience with Contract Manufacturers and high volume assembly of electronic products.
  • Strong communication skills for engaging technical and non-technical audiences.
