About the position

Ullico Inc. is actively seeking a Manager for New Business Underwriting within the Group Life and Health Department of Union Labor Life Insurance Company, located in Silver Spring, MD. This pivotal role is primarily responsible for managing New Business, focusing on underwriting profitability as the company expands its Life and Stop Loss Business. The Manager will delegate workload to assigned staff, ensuring that underwriting processes are accurate and align with company guidelines and profitability goals. This position requires a keen analytical approach to assess claims experience and other risk factors to establish appropriate premium rates for new business. Additionally, the Manager will maintain both internal and external relationships related to underwriting activities, fostering collaboration with senior management, sales teams, brokers, agents, and administrators. The Manager, New Business Underwriting will engage in various responsibilities, including analyzing claims experience and other risk factors to determine premium rates that meet profitability and sales goals. Establishing and maintaining relationships with senior management and third parties is crucial, as is acting as a backup to the New Business Underwriting AVP. The role also involves evaluating and recommending changes to underwriting procedures and systems, assisting in the onboarding and training of new underwriters, and analyzing profitability across different blocks of business by broker partners, agents, and administrators. Furthermore, the Manager will ensure that Summary Plan Descriptions (SPDs), policies, and amendments are reviewed for accuracy and compliance, while also performing other related duties as required.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze claims experience and other risk factors to determine appropriate premium rates for new business prospects.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with senior management, sales teams, and third parties including brokers, agents, and administrators.
  • Act as backup to the New Business Underwriting AVP.
  • Evaluate and recommend changes to underwriting procedures and systems used for underwriting.
  • Assist AVP in onboarding and training new underwriters.
  • Analyze profitability and blocks of business by broker partners, agents, and administrators, reporting results to senior management.
  • Ensure that SPDs, policies, and amendments are reviewed for accuracy and compliance.
  • Perform other similar and related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • A minimum of five to seven years of experience in underwriting or a related field.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel.
