About the position

The Manager of Grounds and Events Services is responsible for providing leadership and supervision to the grounds and events crew at Alfred University. This role encompasses all aspects of maintenance for campus grounds and events, including the management of grounds equipment and the supervision and evaluation of both grounds and events staff as well as student workers. The position requires a proactive approach to ensure that the grounds and events services operate efficiently and effectively, meeting the needs of the campus community. The manager will be tasked with planning and scheduling staff assignments based on workload and available personnel, ensuring that all tasks are prioritized and completed in a timely manner. This includes the ability to reassign staff as necessary to handle emergency projects and to maintain a high standard of service across all grounds and events operations. In addition to supervisory responsibilities, the manager will be involved in record-keeping for time sheets, sick leave, and vacation leave, as well as preparing the annual budget for equipment, supplies, and personnel. The role also requires the manager to provide oral and written instructions to staff, conduct inspections of grounds and assigned areas, and investigate any complaints regarding performance. The manager will also supervise minor maintenance repairs to grounds and events equipment and ensure compliance with safety regulations and protocols. The position demands strong interpersonal skills, the ability to multitask, and effective budget management to ensure the successful performance of the grounds and events services.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and lead support staff, including hiring, evaluating, training, and disciplining.
  • Maintain records of time sheets, sick leave, and vacation leave.
  • Prioritize work schedules for multiple tasks and projects.
  • Plan and schedule staff assignments based on workload and available staff.
  • Reassign staff to ensure work is accomplished according to schedule.
  • Inform staff of agency policies and directives in meetings and memoranda.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations for equipment and work methods to improve efficiency.
  • Prepare the annual budget for equipment, supplies, and personnel.
  • Supervise a perpetual inventory system for equipment and supplies.
  • Provide instructions to staff for special services beyond routine operations.
  • Inspect grounds for compliance with programs and investigate complaints.
  • Supervise minor maintenance repairs to grounds and events equipment.
  • Prepare periodic reports on work activity, costs, and manpower utilization.
  • Supervise the arrangement of premises for special events.
  • Interview prospective employees and recommend qualified candidates for selection.
  • Set training standards for new employees and ensure compliance through follow-up.
  • Assist subordinate supervisors in solving personnel-related problems.
  • Evaluate work performance and take remedial action when necessary.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and comply with safety regulations.
  • Participate in safety training and comply with safety protocols.
  • Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in landscaping, horticulture, or a related field (relevant experience may substitute for the degree requirement).
  • 3-5 years of experience in landscape/grounds maintenance field.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage and multitask.
  • Experience in budget management.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English at a college level.
  • Capability to perform complex mathematical calculations and statistical operations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the institution in written and spoken form.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain regular attendance.
