About the position

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, specifically The Stead Family Children's Hospital, is seeking a dedicated Manager of Injury Prevention and Community Outreach. This pivotal role is located in Iowa City, IA, and is focused on leading efforts to reduce unintentional injuries among children across Iowa and beyond. The manager will be responsible for the comprehensive design, planning, promotion, operation, and evaluation of the Injury Prevention and Community Outreach (IPCO) program. This position requires collaboration with hospital leadership, faculty, and staff to ensure the program's success and sustainability. The manager will primarily operate on-site at the UI Health Care Medical Center - University campus, except for specific outreach activities that may require travel. Key responsibilities include managing the operational and financial aspects of the IPCO program, monitoring project statuses, analyzing program data, and developing reports. The manager will also oversee budget development, monitor accounts and expenditures, and provide fiscal reports to granting agencies and hospital leadership. Generating income through the Stead Family Children's Hospital Safety Store and seeking grant funding to expand various injury prevention programs are also critical components of this role. In addition to administrative duties, the manager will lead the development and implementation of communication strategies and plans, define objectives for events, and oversee their management. They will represent the University in various capacities, including presenting injury prevention programs and serving on committees. The role also involves managing staff who coordinate complex events and presentations, developing educational programs aimed at reducing injuries in children, and ensuring compliance with applicable standards. The manager will analyze data for quality improvement and evaluate program effectiveness, making recommendations for necessary changes to enhance impact. This position requires strong leadership skills, the ability to develop effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders, and a commitment to community outreach and education. The manager will also be responsible for hiring, developing, and managing support staff to achieve program goals effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and administer the operational and/or financial activities for the Injury Prevention and Community Outreach program.
  • Monitor status of projects and analyze program data.
  • Develop reports and oversee activities related to the program.
  • Determine costs and manage budget development, including monitoring accounts and expenditures.
  • Provide fiscal reports to granting agencies and/or hospital leadership.
  • Generate income through the Stead Family Children's Hospital Safety Store.
  • Seek and achieve grant funding to expand and sustain various injury prevention programs.
  • Identify potential vendors and key stakeholders, gather financial quotes, and select bids.
  • Implement and manage new programs, services, and program components.
  • Conduct and report periodic evaluations of the Injury Prevention/Community Outreach program operation.
  • Prioritize, lead, and recommend strategic plan direction for the program.
  • Serve as Program Coordinator for the Injury Free Coalition for Kids.
  • Lead the development and implementation of communication strategies and plans.
  • Define objectives for events, oversee management, and implement follow-ups.
  • Prepare and maintain appropriate periodic and special program operations reports and surveys.
  • Represent the University on behalf of the program throughout the community, state, and nation.
  • Manage staff overseeing the coordination of complex events and presentations.
  • Plan and arrange for appropriate facilities and services for program events.
  • Develop educational programs to reduce injuries in children.
  • Lead task force teams and committees to develop educational and promotional materials.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Develop communication strategies to promote programs and services.
  • Present to professional groups and publish results in journals.
  • Analyze data for quality improvement and pediatric injury prevention initiatives.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and impact using surveys and questionnaires.
  • Collect, maintain, and analyze data on program participants and events.
  • Provide functional and administrative supervision of staff, offering direction and feedback.
  • Hire, develop, and manage the performance of support staff.
  • Form, develop, and lead multidisciplinary and community-based teams.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three years related administrative and program experience.
  • Minimum three years' experience with demonstrated excellence in public speaking.
  • Demonstrated excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Maintains current, valid driver's license and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards.
  • Master's degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Health or a similar discipline, or a Bachelor's degree and an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Minimum three years of knowledge of University policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Certification as a Child Passenger Safety Technician required within 6 months of employment.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with community outreach/partnerships.
