About the position

The Manager of Research Computing at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) plays a pivotal role in overseeing the development, implementation, and management of advanced computing resources and services that support the research activities at the university. This position is crucial for fostering collaboration among faculty, researchers, and IT staff to promote innovative uses of research technology, including high-performance computing (HPC) systems, data storage solutions, and research software applications. The Manager will be responsible for providing consultation on research computing, guiding the acquisition of research technology, and establishing policies and processes that facilitate faculty usage of these technologies. In this leadership role, the Manager will develop and implement strategic plans for the research computing infrastructure and services, ensuring alignment with the university's goals. This includes planning research program development efforts, which encompass initiatives, communications, pilot programs, guidelines, and evaluative processes. The Manager will also participate in departmental planning and decision-making within Information Technology Services (ITS), conducting user satisfaction surveys and needs analyses to better understand the requirements of the faculty and researchers. Collaboration is a key aspect of this role, as the Manager will facilitate awareness campaigns, training sessions, and workshops aimed at expanding research capabilities at LMU. By working closely with department chairs, faculty, and researchers, the Manager will assess their computing needs and provide tailored solutions. Additionally, the Manager will serve as the primary point of contact for research computing inquiries and support requests, coordinating ITS support for research efforts, including data management and security. The technical expertise required for this position includes ensuring the effective installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of HPC systems and data storage resources. The Manager will collaborate with the Information Security Team to develop research computing policies and practices that comply with industry regulations and best practices, ensuring data security and compliance with institutional requirements. Monitoring system performance and recommending improvements to optimize resource utilization will also be part of the Manager's responsibilities. Project management is another critical component of this role, as the Manager will oversee research computing projects from inception to completion, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to budget constraints. This includes coordinating with external vendors and service providers to procure and implement new technologies, as well as preparing and presenting reports on the status and impact of research computing initiatives. The Manager will also be responsible for developing, forecasting, and managing the budget for research computing support, collaborating with the Director of Educational Technology on budgeting for all research computing services and infrastructure.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Typically a Master's Degree (Doctorate preferred) in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in research computing or a related field, with at least 2 years in a managerial role.
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience with HPC systems, data storage solutions, and research software applications.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of strategy and project management and planning.
  • Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral) with experience in preparing comprehensive reports and executive summaries.
  • Strong analytical skills with a proven record of problem solving.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience communicating with university faculty.
  • Highly developed organizational skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, write, and interpret complex documents.
