About the position

The Payroll Manager will lead the payroll function for the Los Angeles Lakers, ensuring accurate and timely processing of payroll for all entities, including players and staff across multiple locations and states. This role involves collaboration with various departments to maintain compliance and improve payroll operations, while also managing a team and overseeing payroll-related audits and reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the timely processing of the end-to-end payroll process for all players and staff.
  • Verify all payroll data, ensuring proper capturing of gross, taxes, adjustments, and deductions.
  • Accurately process, submit, and oversee all payroll taxes to governmental entities.
  • Maintain and reconcile electronic time and attendance system, including timesheet calculations.
  • Maintain records of payroll data with an emphasis on confidentiality and integrity.
  • Coordinate with external payroll vendors to ensure service quality and resolve issues.
  • Review reconciliation for payroll-related general ledger accounts with the accounting team.
  • Prepare and manage payroll-related information for required audits.
  • Develop methods and procedures for accurate payroll reporting and process improvement.
  • Lead and manage the payroll group, providing guidance and support.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws and best practices.
  • Prepare timely funding of benefits and reconcile insurance billing to payroll reports.
  • Monitor and reconcile FSA weekly invoices and 401K eligibility statuses.
  • Coordinate with third-party vendors for ACA reporting and manage annual 401K processing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resource Management, or Business Administration (required).
  • Minimum of 8 years' experience in payroll, benefits, and accounting.
  • Prior knowledge of ADP Workforce Now or other payroll platforms.
  • Extensive knowledge of payroll function including preparation, balancing, internal controls, and payroll taxes.
  • Proven technical knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations impacting payroll and employee benefits.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification (preferred).
  • Previous experience in the sports and entertainment industry (preferred).
  • Experience with withholding obligations for U.S. citizens working abroad and Non-Resident Aliens.
