About the position

The Manager of Protection & Controls Engineering will lead a small team of engineers, designers, and drafters in developing substation project design packages. This role emphasizes collaboration with various engineering disciplines, client relationship management, and the execution of engineering-related activities. The position requires a strong technical background in protection and control engineering, particularly for medium to high voltage projects, and involves mentoring team members to foster their professional growth.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and direction for a small team of Engineers, Designers, and/or Drafters.
• Develop and foster client relationships built on work excellence, success, and integrity.
• Lead the Protection & Control Engineering Team in performing engineering-related activities.
• Serve as Engineer of Record (EOR) in area of expertise, sealing design drawings as required.
• Develop proposals, scopes, estimates, schedules, and conceptual/feasibility studies.
• Perform relay protection and control engineering associated with medium to high voltage projects.
• Create design criteria and material specifications appropriate for the designs.
• Facilitate the development of Protection & Control drawing packages.
• Review vendor submittals and provide analysis/feedback.
• Generate reports including coordination studies.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program; Higher Education preferred.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Kansas or other states acceptable for reciprocity.
• 7-10 years of work experience related to Substation Design or related area required.
• Knowledgeable on applicable codes and industry standards including NESC, NEC, and IEEE standards.
• Familiarity with NERC/FERC Reliability Standards is required.
• Experience with development and selection of protection schemes and settings.
• Proficient with various software packages including AutoCAD, Mathcad, and other design tools.
• Ability to manage multiple projects within deadlines and established budgets.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

• Familiarity with design tools including Aspen One-Liner, ETAP, SKM Power Tools, Milsoft WindMil/LightTable, WinIGS, & GroundMat.
• Ability to grow and develop customer/client relationships through excellence in work.
