About the position

The Manager of Public Relations & Information Management at the University of Maryland is responsible for overseeing the communication environment for the Institute for Systems Research (ISR). This role involves managing relationships with multiple internal and external clients and target audiences, developing marketing and public relations strategies, and implementing initiatives that enhance the visibility and reputation of the ISR. The manager will directly support the ISR director by providing high-level communication expertise and leadership, ensuring that the office's objectives align with the broader goals of the university and the Clark School of Engineering. In this position, the manager will be tasked with building and maintaining relationships with the media, the university community, and various units within the Clark School. A significant aspect of the role includes developing and managing a comprehensive internet presence for ISR, which encompasses producing high-quality publications in both long and short formats. The manager will also administer and manage ISR information, including research products, faculty, student and alumni achievements, and partnerships with industry and government. The A. James Clark School of Engineering is dedicated to fostering high-quality research and innovation, preparing students to tackle the Grand Challenges of the 21st century. The manager will play a crucial role in transforming research and learning activities into innovations that benefit society, thereby contributing to the mission of the Clark School and the university as a whole.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the communication environment for the Institute for Systems Research (ISR) with multiple internal and external clients.
  • Develop marketing and public relations strategies and plans.
  • Provide high-level communication expertise to the ISR director.
  • Build and maintain relationships with the media, university, and Clark School units.
  • Develop and manage a comprehensive internet presence for ISR.
  • Produce high-quality long- and short-format publications.
  • Administer and manage ISR information, including research products and achievements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, preferably in journalism, communication, marketing, public relations, or a related field.
  • 5 years of experience in public relations and marketing, including web content development and management.
  • Experience in publications writing, editing, design, and production.
  • Media relations experience is required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of prior supervisory experience is required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and flexible strategies for interacting with a variety of individuals at all levels.

Nice-to-haves

  • Background in technical or science writing is highly desirable.
  • Experience in a higher-education environment is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of UMCP administration and contacts within the university is highly desirable.
