About the position

The Manager of Purchasing at Genesee & Wyoming Railroad Services Inc. is a pivotal role responsible for the implementation and monitoring of sourcing strategies, procedures, and processes. This position requires a strategic thinker who can provide support for assigned commodities by creating and implementing effective commodity and supplier strategies. The individual will be tasked with sourcing materials and services that meet the operational requirements of G&W, particularly in relation to engineering services for design and construction projects. In this role, the manager will support the Purchasing Department Leader in developing and delivering 'Best in Class' sourcing strategies. This includes organizing, facilitating, and managing cross-functional teams to develop comprehensive commodity plans for locomotive fuel purchases. These plans will encompass the development and implementation of sourcing strategies, supplier improvement plans, supplier reviews, and risk management initiatives. The manager will also be responsible for developing and managing diesel fuel programs to ensure that current needs are met while effectively managing business risks and contracts. Additionally, the position involves managing relationships and decision-making processes between Purchasing and Business Units to ensure compliance with new rates, supplier relationships, sourcing strategies, policies, and procedures. The manager will provide risk analysis and mitigation strategies regarding daily and future energy requirements, develop plans to protect G&W from potential energy supply shortages, and prepare strategic energy plans aimed at improving supply or reducing costs. This includes exploring new logistics opportunities and facility strategies. The role also requires oversight of energy suppliers and services, coordination of long-term facility and operational requirements with internal customers, and support for the Finance team with forecasts and budget details for all energy products. Furthermore, the manager will identify and implement new technologies to reduce energy consumption and provide leadership in identifying fuel efficiency opportunities while ensuring environmental compliance in collaboration with the Environmental and Facility team. Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities may also be assigned by the manager, including the procurement of vehicles to enhance the fleet and managing the company's fleet operations through a third-party provider.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or a minimum of seven years of related purchasing experience, preferably in the rail industry.
  • Solid foundation of engineering services related to the railroad industry.
  • Experience in assessing supplier capabilities and negotiating supply contracts.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical, and negotiation skills.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Access, and PowerPoint; experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP or equivalent ERP system.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines independently.
  • Experience leading projects and cross-functional work teams.
  • Strong problem-identification and problem-solving skills.
