About the position

The Manager of Recreation - Facility Operations at Northern Arizona University is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the university's Recreation Center, which serves over 600,000 visits annually. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Informal Recreation, the incumbent will manage a team of nearly 60 student employees, including facility managers, weight room attendants, and event staff. This position requires a strong focus on facility management, member services, fiscal management, and risk management, ensuring that the Recreation Center operates smoothly and efficiently while providing a safe and inclusive environment for all users. In terms of facility management, the Manager will coordinate daily functions and operations, ensuring cleanliness, safety, and maintenance of the Recreation Center. The role also involves cultivating an inclusive environment, addressing patron behavior, and overseeing facility reservations and events. Member services are a critical component of this position, as the Manager will oversee customer service operations, manage facility software for transactions, and assist in budget preparation and monitoring related to memberships and facility usage. Fiscal management responsibilities include preparing regular reports on financial performance and participation, assisting in the development of training methods for staff, and collaborating with other departments to enhance recreation opportunities for the campus community. Additionally, the Manager will play a key role in risk management, participating in the department's risk management team and assisting with the Recreation Center's operating budget and equipment maintenance. This position is primarily on-site at the Flagstaff Mountain campus, with rare opportunities for remote work. The Manager may be required to work after hours, during holidays, or emergency closures, and should expect to work more than 40 hours per week, including evenings and weekends. The role is essential for promoting informal recreation and managing special events, making it a dynamic and impactful position within the university's Campus Recreation Services.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate daily functions and operations for the Recreation Center under the direction of the Assistant Director of Informal Recreation, including its programs, services, and equipment.
  • Ensure cleanliness, appearance, safety, and maintenance of the Recreation Center program spaces and locker rooms.
  • Cultivate an inclusive, safe, and diverse environment for staff, members, and guests; address patron behavior, concerns, and conduct issues as necessary.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate a qualified team of nearly 60 students including facility managers, weight room attendants, rovers, field staff, and special events staff.
  • Assist in oversight of facility reservations and events taking place in the facility with the Coordinator of Reservations and Events.
  • Oversee customer service operations related to access control and guest services.
  • Administer facility software that includes all in-person and online transactions for Campus Recreation related to point of sale, member/participant facility access, membership database, equipment rental, and locker rentals.
  • Responsible for assisting in the preparation, forecasting, and monitoring of income and expense budgets as it relates to all memberships, lockers, membership programming, and facility reservations.
  • Prepare regular written communication such as monthly, quarterly, and annual reports, financial and participation reports, and equipment inventory reports as needed.
  • Assist with development and revision of training methods for staff, including employee manuals and in-service training.
  • Assist with developing new and revising current policies/procedures, programs, and management methods.
  • Collaborate within department and across campus as a partner to offer recreation opportunities and activities to the campus community.
  • Serve as a member of the department's risk management team.
  • Assist with creating, monitoring, and managing the Recreation Center operating budget.
  • Assist in the development of marketing and promotion plans for department programs.
  • Participate in university-wide committees and work groups to contribute to the advancement of the University's mission.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • 2 to 4 years of relevant experience.
  • 1 to 2 years of management or supervisory experience.
  • Nationally recognized CPR, AED, First Aid certification or the ability to obtain within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
