About the position

The Manager - Research Software Engineering is a key leadership role within the Research Technology Application Solutions team at Stanford Health Care. This position is responsible for managing and developing high-performing software engineering teams that deliver impactful software solutions to support the research needs of Stanford Medicine. The role involves overseeing project management, optimizing software development processes, and ensuring effective communication between technical teams and stakeholders. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, technical expertise, and a collaborative spirit to foster innovation and continuous improvement within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration and professional development.
  • Delegate tasks effectively and provide regular feedback to team members.
  • Motivate and inspire team members to achieve their full potential and create a positive work environment.
  • Provide technical guidance and direction on complex projects, ensuring adherence to best practices and architectural standards.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and identify opportunities for innovation.
  • Contribute to the design and architecture of software solutions, ensuring scalability and maintainability.
  • Define project goals, timelines, and deliverables in collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Monitor project progress, identify risks, and ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Manage project budgets and resources effectively.
  • Collaborate with product managers to develop and refine product strategy and roadmap.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 6 years of experience with software development in multiple programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).
  • 6 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading and managing software engineering teams.
  • Deep technical expertise in software development principles and methodologies (e.g., Agile, DevOps).
  • Strong strategic thinking and vision to implement software engineering initiatives.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
