About the position

The Manager, Software Engineering at Workday is responsible for leading a full stack development team that creates tools for the developer community, enhancing the value of Workday's offerings. This role focuses on building, mentoring, and developing a capable team while ensuring the delivery of a strategic roadmap and portfolio. The manager will collaborate with product management and other engineering teams to meet business objectives and improve processes within the development organization.

Responsibilities

  • Build, grow, develop, and mentor a highly capable development team.
  • Lead a team of diverse software developers building developer tools using React and Kotlin/Java.
  • Provide mentoring and support to direct report staff in both technical and non-technical issues.
  • Ensure high efficiency of team members and support their career growth and personal development.
  • Understand business strategy and goals, translating those into meaningful objectives and key results.
  • Collaborate with product management and other engineering organizations to determine release scope and ensure features meet requirements.
  • Contribute to process improvement within the development organization and embrace best engineering practices.
  • Own the day-to-day agile activities of the team and actively track release and metrics.

Requirements

  • 6+ years software development experience with large-scale Internet-facing systems.
  • 3+ years previous experience managing a team including performance and career management.
  • Experience writing software in at least one modern programming language such as Java and front-end development knowledge.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Passion for software development and building a strong engineering team.
  • Ability to hire, empower, and inspire the team.
  • Experience in leading software development for distributed scalable systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to take a project or significant feature from concept to launch.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Comfortable coding alongside the team when needed.
