About the position

At Capital One, we are seeking a passionate and experienced Manager of Software Engineering to lead our Back End team in New York. This role is pivotal in driving a major transformation within Capital One, where you will be part of a dynamic group of innovators dedicated to solving complex business problems in a fast-paced, collaborative, and inclusive environment. As a Manager, you will not only oversee a team of engineers but also engage in hands-on technical support and career mentorship, ensuring that your team is equipped to deliver robust cloud-based solutions that empower millions of Americans financially. In this position, you will manage project strategies and advocate for best practices while building strong relationships across teams. Your role will involve staying abreast of the latest technology trends, experimenting with new technologies, and mentoring fellow engineers. You will collaborate closely with digital product managers to deliver impactful solutions, utilizing a variety of technologies including Python, Open Source RDBMS, NoSQL databases, and AWS tools and services. Your leadership will be crucial in fostering an environment of innovation and excellence within the engineering community at Capital One.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of Engineers by executing project strategy, providing career mentorship, and offering hands-on technical support.
  • Drive impact beyond the scope of the project/team by building relationships and advocating for best practices.
  • Stay updated on tech trends, experiment with new technologies, and participate in technology communities.
  • Mentor other members of the engineering community and occasionally code or evaluate code.
  • Collaborate with digital product managers to deliver robust cloud-based solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • At least 6 years of professional software engineering experience (Internship experience does not apply).
  • At least 1 year of experience with cloud computing (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud).
  • At least 2 years of people management experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in a relevant field.
  • 7+ years of experience using Python.
  • 2+ years of experience with AWS.
  • 4+ years of experience in open source frameworks.
  • 5+ years of people management experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in Agile practices.
