About the position

The Manager, Software Engineering at Selective Insurance is responsible for delivering software solutions and information systems that address the needs of the Commercial Lines business and its customers. This role involves overseeing a team of software engineers and leads, ensuring that applications align with business strategies while providing technical leadership and support for application delivery teams on new projects and enhancements.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of business application projects for Commercial business.
  • Meet with other managers (IT and business) to discuss system requirements, specifications, costs, and timelines.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with business and IT counterparts to ensure proper collaboration.
  • Accountable for project scope, schedule, and budget, ensuring commitments and progress are monitored closely and communicated clearly.
  • Forecast and allocate team members across several development projects.
  • Regularly report key metrics like resource allocation, software defects, productivity, and efficiency.
  • Train, supervise, assign projects to, evaluate, and be responsible for hiring/termination of IT personnel and contracting staff.
  • Manage talent to ensure high morale and appropriate advancement of individual goals and career aspirations.
  • Participate in the evaluation, acquisition, and implementation of vendor software to support business processes.
  • Troubleshoot technology issues.
  • Participate in and implement established quality improvement initiatives and processes.
  • Establish and enforce design and coding standards in conjunction with the architecture group.
  • Evaluate and recommend application development tools.

Requirements

  • College degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Business, or related field preferred.
  • Prior management/supervisory experience with information technology personnel and offshore/onsite consultants preferred.
  • Prior hands-on application development experience using web-based technologies and languages is preferred.
  • Solid knowledge of surrounding technologies including design patterns and modern standards.
  • Great leadership skills to work effectively with peers within and across organizations.
  • Solid written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to deliver compelling presentations.
  • Strong ability to manage and execute on multiple project timelines and manage competing priorities.
  • Experience in Property Casualty insurance is a plus.
