About the position

The Manager of Software Engineering will provide leadership, support, and strategic direction for laboratory information systems and supporting platforms within a multi-hospital environment. This role is pivotal in ensuring that the team adheres to Quest policies and procedures while fostering a culture of continuous improvement in all areas of technology. The manager will delegate tasks, organize, mentor, and motivate a team of resources to achieve optimal performance and project outcomes. In this position, the manager will be responsible for reviewing product architectural designs, requirements specifications, and test specifications. They will determine and approve estimates for development tasks, design, configure, debug, and deploy software within scheduled timeframes. The role also involves conducting technical assessments of the impact of any changes to product requirements and providing day-to-day technical guidance to project team members. The manager will highlight, review, and mitigate technical risks while supporting the project team with project-specific processes, procedures, tools, and techniques. Additionally, the manager will contribute to the continuous improvement of the organization's development procedures by identifying opportunities for enhancement and implementing effective solutions. They will resolve technical issues in collaboration with team members and serve as the technical point of contact with Test and Documentation, ensuring the delivery of required technical information. The manager will also be responsible for identifying technology training requirements and working with the Director on the development and administration of the departmental budget. Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing potential candidates, hiring, training, overseeing daily activities, and conducting performance appraisals of employees.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, support, and strategic direction for laboratory information systems in a multi-hospital environment.
  • Delegate tasks and organize a team of resources while mentoring and motivating them.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement in technology areas.
  • Ensure team adherence to Quest policies and procedures framework.
  • Review product architectural design, requirements specifications, and test specifications.
  • Determine and approve estimates for development tasks.
  • Design, configure, debug, and deploy software within scheduled timeframes.
  • Conduct technical assessments of changes to product requirements.
  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance to project team members.
  • Highlight, review, and mitigate technical risks.
  • Support the project team with project-specific processes, procedures, tools, and techniques.
  • Contribute to the improvement of the organization's development procedures.
  • Resolve technical issues in conjunction with team members.
  • Act as the technical point of contact with Test and Documentation.
  • Ensure designs, code, and unit tests are consistent, robust, and scalable.
  • Identify technology training requirements.
  • Work with the Director on departmental budget development and administration.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.
  • Interview potential candidates, hire, train, and oversee daily activities of employees.

Requirements

  • BS/BA degree in Computer Science/Information Systems or related field including MLT, MT.
  • At least 5 years of experience working with Sunquest / CliniSys LIS or other laboratory information systems.
  • Minimum 3 years of people leader experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in leveraging Customer Experience processes to advocate for customers.
  • Ability to manage a team of 2-5 resources.
  • Effective communication skills with Senior Leadership.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in coaching, mentoring, and/or training other team members.
  • Knowledge of customer experience management, laboratory operations workflow, and laboratory instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with design thinking and business/digital analysis.
  • Experience in the healthcare or clinical lab industry.
