About the position

The Software Engineer position at Disney Entertainment & ESPN Technology involves building and managing systems that publish data to Hulu's internal and edge-facing services. This role is crucial for enhancing the user experience across various devices, including smart TVs, smartphones, and gaming consoles. The engineer will work within a collaborative team to drive innovation and ensure the reliability of services that support millions of Hulu viewers.

Responsibilities

  • Guide an engineering team in its ownership of systems and processes.
  • Collaborate with engineering and product leadership to establish priorities.
  • Champion cross-team projects.
  • Collaborate efficiently with product management, technical program management, operations, and other engineering teams to capture requirements, drive implementation, and provide transparency.
  • Provide priority and roadmap guidance to engineers and project managers through regular sprint planning and daily check-ins.
  • Provide input for stakeholders and decision makers in architecture, roadmap, and product.
  • Communicate architecture, roadmap, and product objectives to engineers and gather feedback for stakeholders.
  • Coach and mentor other specialists on the team to ensure that all software utilizes Hulu and industry best practices for data persistence.
  • Work with individual engineers to map out career growth and goals.
  • Create an environment of trust for people to be themselves and able to excel.

Requirements

  • 8 years of experience in software engineering with a significant portion as a programmer and/or technical leader.
  • 5+ years of related experience crafting large-scale, highly available Java services utilizing various database and messaging technologies.
  • 3 years of experience as a manager of software engineers.
  • Experience deploying and scaling within a cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience directly managing and mentoring a team.
  • Experience using source control systems and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong programming skills in an object-oriented language, and a strong grasp of computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, databases, etc.).
  • Strong verbal/written communication and data presentation skills.
