About the position

The Manager, Software Engineering will lead and provide strategic direction for laboratory information systems in a multi-hospital environment. This hybrid role requires three days of on-site work in Chantilly, VA, and two days of remote work. The position involves overseeing technical aspects of software development, mentoring team members, and ensuring adherence to organizational policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Review product architectural design, requirements specifications, and test specifications.
  • Conduct technical assessments of changes to product requirements.
  • Engage in design, coding, unit testing, and code review as needed (25-30% of the role).
  • Design, configure, debug, and deploy software within scheduled timeframes.
  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance to project team members.
  • Highlight, review, and mitigate technical risks.
  • Resolve technical issues in collaboration with team members.
  • Determine and approve estimates for development tasks.
  • Support the project team with project-specific processes, procedures, tools, and techniques.
  • Act as the technical point of contact with Test and Documentation, ensuring delivery of required technical information.
  • Ensure designs, code, and unit tests are consistent, robust, and scalable.
  • Delegate tasks, organize, mentor, and motivate a team of resources.
  • Contribute to the improvement of development procedures by identifying opportunities and implementing solutions.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement in technology areas and instill these principles in the team.
  • Identify technology training requirements.
  • Assist the Director in developing and administering the departmental budget.
  • Steward process improvement initiatives.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.
  • Interview potential candidates, hire, train, oversee daily activities, and conduct performance appraisals.

Requirements

  • BS/BA degree in Computer Science/Information Systems or related field including MLT, MT.
  • At least 5 years of experience working with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
  • 5 to 10 years of programming experience in JAVA, Angular, VB, .NET, C++, Python.
  • Minimum 5 years of people leadership experience.
  • Experience in coaching, mentoring, and/or training team members.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of Customer Experience Management.
  • Familiarity with laboratory operations workflow and instrumentation.
  • Experience with Design Thinking and Business/Digital Analysis.
  • Agile methodology experience.
  • Healthcare or clinical lab industry knowledge.
