About the position

Leonardo DRS Land Systems is seeking a full-time Software Engineering Manager for our Bridgeton, MO facility. This role will be responsible for supervising and developing a team of software engineers, ensuring that activities are completed on time and within budget. The software group is tasked with the design, development, analysis, documentation, and support testing of products, systems, or subsystems. The position requires the ability to independently complete technical projects and to mentor or coach other engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment. As a Software Engineering Manager, you will manage and supervise the work of a software engineering team, driving technology through design, development, analysis, documentation, and support testing of various products and systems. You will be responsible for developing and performance managing the software group, managing budget, cost, and schedule inputs, and continuously improving engineering practices to support efficiency, reliability, and serviceability goals. You will review customer specifications and requirements, developing designs that best support them while considering cost as a key design variable. In this role, you will apply your technical expertise to lead the software engineering team in solving complex embedded design problems, develop a strong technical platform vision, and encourage team members to build configuration-driven platform tools. You will also drive program design to cost and design, document component and subsystem specifications, and participate in the preparation of proposals. Your responsibilities will include ensuring the completion of assigned tasks on time and meeting technical requirements, conceptualizing systems and software technical designs, and supporting technical engineering activities such as design reviews. Additionally, you will participate in resolving technical issues within the company and with outside suppliers, attend engineering, customer, or business meetings, and mentor or coach staff. Clear communication with company personnel and customers is essential, as is supporting and reinforcing the mission, values, and culture of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise the work of a software engineering team responsible for design, development, analysis, documentation, and support testing of products, systems, or subsystems.
  • Develop and performance manage the software group.
  • Manage budget, cost, and schedule input for the software department.
  • Continuously improve engineering practices for the software platform to support efficiency, reliability, and serviceability goals.
  • Review customer specifications and requirements, developing designs that best support them, including cost as a key design variable.
  • Lead the software engineering team in solving complex embedded design problems.
  • Develop a strong technical platform vision that encourages team members to build configuration-driven platform tools.
  • Drive program design to cost and design.
  • Document component and subsystem specifications requirements.
  • Participate in preparation of proposals and ensure completion of assigned tasks on time and meeting technical requirements.
  • Conceptualize systems and software technical designs in collaboration with staff.
  • Support and participate in technical engineering support activities, such as design reviews.
  • Mentor and coach staff, providing assistance and communicating work priorities.
  • Communicate clearly with other company personnel and customers as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering or related technical field with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated people and technical leadership capabilities.
  • Proven Computer Science fundamentals in embedded development, algorithm design, problem solving, and complexity analysis.
  • Experience in one of the following: C, C++, C#, and/or Java.
  • Experience taking a leading role in building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers.
  • Experience influencing software engineering best practices within the team.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong mentor of peers and subordinates.
  • Experience with Linux/Unix is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a Department of Defense (DoD) Secret Clearance is required.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
