About the position

The Manager of Software Engineering at RELX INC is a pivotal role that provides leadership, management, direction, and vision to a team of software engineers and development employees, including offshore contractors, consultants, and interns. This position is responsible for overseeing the software development life cycle, ensuring that all activities are aligned with the company's strategic goals. The manager will work closely with development peers, product and project leaders, and other in-house software developers to ensure the successful completion and delivery of software components and related deliverables. Reporting progress to senior management is a key aspect of this role, along with additional responsibilities such as budget oversight, talent identification, and resource allocation. The ideal candidate will have over 10 years of software development experience, with at least 2 years in a management capacity. A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science is required, with an advanced degree preferred. The role demands a strong technical background, particularly in database technology, data modeling, and software development methodologies such as Agile and Waterfall. The manager will also be responsible for driving the development backlog, collaborating with delivery managers to define work, measure progress, and deliver high-quality software solutions in an agile environment. In addition to technical expertise, the position requires strong organizational, project planning, and change management skills. The manager will lead teams in troubleshooting complex project issues, ensuring that enterprise and architectural standards are adhered to, and managing system and user acceptance testing cycles. The role also involves writing advanced code, serving as a technical point of contact for external resources, and consulting with stakeholders to find alternative solutions during system outages. Overall, this position is crucial for fostering innovation, empowering staff, and ensuring that the team meets and exceeds performance goals consistently.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and direction to software engineers and development employees.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of Software Development experience.
  • 2+ years of management experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Computer Science or equivalent experience required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Strong proficiency in database technology, design, and manipulation.
  • Expertise in data modeling principles and their application to complex business needs.
  • Proven knowledge and experience in project planning and management tools.
  • Expertise in industry best practices in offshore partnership development.
  • Strong experience with various resource models such as Managed Services and/or Staff Augmentation.
  • Extensive experience in data analysis and SQL.
