About the position

System1 is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead the Mobile team, focusing on the execution of the technical roadmap and impacting MapQuest mobile products. The role involves transforming mobile architecture, developing new features, and maintaining existing applications while transitioning to a cross-platform solution using React Native. The Engineering Manager will also be responsible for leading a team of engineers, contributing to the codebase, and driving the future of the product and team in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the transformation of mobile architecture and develop new features for MapQuest and RoadWarrior applications.
  • Spearhead the transition from native (Swift and Kotlin) to a cross-platform solution using React Native and Expo.
  • Maintain and enhance the existing native codebase, requiring strong experience in native iOS and Android development.
  • Design, implement, and test new features in collaboration with Product and Design teams.
  • Drive the full engineering lifecycle from concept to deployment while balancing tech debt and timely releases.
  • Lead hiring efforts to build a skilled team of engineers focused on cross-platform collaboration.
  • Automate and optimize processes by introducing automated testing and improving CI/CD pipelines.
  • Analyze performance data using tools like New Relic and Amplitude to improve application metrics and reliability.
  • Guide the team through the ongoing transition to a cohesive mobile architecture while maintaining native expertise.
  • Collaborate with engineering and cross-functional teams to solve technical challenges and innovate solutions.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of software development experience, with at least 3 years leading mobile engineering teams.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in developing and maintaining native mobile applications in Swift or Kotlin.
  • Demonstrated success in transitioning from native to cross-platform technologies in a production environment.
  • Expertise in mobile best practices and coding standards, with the ability to write clean and efficient code.
  • Experience with collaborative workflows using Git, including pull requests and code reviews.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills to articulate technical concepts and mentor a team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the geospatial software space, including mapping APIs (e.g., Google Maps API, OpenStreetMap).
