About the position

The Manager of Technical Accounting will lead the operations of the Technical Accounting team, serving as an accounting expert and business partner for internal business units. This role involves managing complex accounting areas such as allowance for credit losses, fair value accounting, derivatives, investment, and debt accounting. The manager will be responsible for building and enhancing various analytics for leadership reporting, delivering process improvements, and providing overall leadership to the team. Additionally, the manager will oversee the development, periodic review, update, and maintenance of risk, processes, controls, and metrics within the respective teams. In collaboration with the Assistant Vice President of Technical Accounting, the manager will develop a talent strategy that includes talent development and succession planning, and will lead the execution of this strategy within the team. The role requires collaboration with other managers to support the operational strategy and ensure alignment with broader Finance and Corporate Accounting strategic goals. The manager will also be responsible for supervising the monthly closing process, ensuring compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements, and leading initiatives to design and build reporting tools and data analytics to support strategic initiatives. This position requires a strong understanding of accounting principles and the ability to manage multiple priorities while providing leadership and guidance to the team.

Responsibilities

  • Manage group operations and oversee the accounting activities associated with complex accounting areas and support related analytics and reporting.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of GAAP and ASC for focus areas and apply specialized knowledge in accounting, analyzing, and reporting financial information.
  • Collaborate with Business Partners across the Enterprise to understand business needs and ensure timely and accurate recording of transactions and accounting activities.
  • Supervise and run the monthly closing process and related activities, including monthly forecasts and review of all entries.
  • Partner with the Accounting Policy team to ensure compliance with accounting and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure timely completion of daily and monthly reconciliations, addressing aged un-reconciled amounts as per policy.
  • Lead initiatives to design and build reporting tools and data analytics to support strategic initiatives.
  • Identify and implement automation and process improvement initiatives, presenting recommendations to leadership.
  • Handle requests from auditors and regulators, including follow-up requests.
  • Research and analyze complex accounting transactions and provide guidance to business partners.
  • Direct internal business partners in maintaining financial reporting and information systems, ensuring the flow of financial information.
  • Respond to inquiries from management regarding financial results and complex accounting transactions.
  • Ensure key controls are implemented and adhered to, reviewing for necessary changes.
  • Establish goals and objectives that align with department policies and key results.
  • Identify and select talent for the team, providing a positive onboarding experience.
  • Develop talent strategy to ensure performance is measured and rewarded, and feedback is provided timely.
  • Assist with budget requirements and contribute to forecasting and preparation of the AFP.
  • Monitor status of major projects and provide updates to leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Certified Public Accountant designation in good standing.
  • Extensive experience in public or private accounting applying complex accounting treatments and resolving complex accounting issues.
  • Extensive experience with financial accounting and management, including techniques used in analysis and reporting of financial information.
  • Extensive experience in researching, interpreting, and applying GAAP and Accounting Standard Codifications.
  • Extensive experience managing people in technical accounting or financial reporting in a corporate environment, demonstrating strong leadership skills.
  • Ability to lead the team by developing talent strategy and realizing operational efficiency.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities independently and in a team environment.
  • Experience in leading complex projects and working with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly.
  • Highly proficient in resolving conflicting requests and maintaining accuracy with attention to detail.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior experience with Big 4 public accounting firms (e.g., Audit, Advisory, Consulting).
  • Experience with Oracle PeopleSoft or financial accounting & reporting automated systems, analytical and data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI.
  • Thorough knowledge of NCUA policies, procedures, and regulations and their application to Navy Federal's organizational structure.
