About the position

The position involves leading the operations of the Operational Accounting or Technical Accounting team, focusing on General Ledger operations and serving as an accounting expert and business partner for internal business units. The role emphasizes delivering process improvements, managing risk, and maintaining controls while developing talent strategies and aligning operational strategies with corporate goals.

Responsibilities

  • Manage group operations and oversee accounting activities to maintain the company's general ledger and financial statements.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of financial statements, general ledger structure, and related chart of accounts.
  • Collaborate across the enterprise to ensure timely and accurate recording of transactions and accounting activities.
  • Supervise and run the monthly closing process and related activities, including monthly forecasts and review of entries.
  • Partner with the Accounting Policy team to ensure compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure timely completion of daily and monthly reconciliations, addressing aged un-reconciled amounts as per policy.
  • Coordinate with Product Optimization team to ensure proper capture of general ledger interface activity and resolve discrepancies.
  • Handle requests from auditors and regulators, including follow-up requests.
  • Serve as an accounting subject matter expert and liaison for internal business partners and external contacts.
  • Research and analyze complex accounting transactions and provide guidance to business partners.
  • Direct internal business partners in maintaining financial reporting and information systems.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding financial results and complex accounting transactions.
  • Ensure key controls are implemented and regularly reviewed for changes.
  • Coordinate development and maintenance of financial systems and facilitate process improvements.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with the Product Optimization team and contribute to system implementations.
  • Review and analyze processes to identify operational efficiencies and recommend improvements.
  • Collaborate with ISD and other teams to provide expertise on processes and assist with business requirements.
  • Manage the impact of corporate projects on the GL and financials, providing communication support to project teams.
  • Perform managerial supervision, establishing goals and objectives aligned with department policies.
  • Identify and select talent for the team, ensuring a positive onboarding experience.
  • Develop talent strategy to measure performance and provide timely feedback.
  • Assist with budget requirements and contribute to forecasting and AFP preparation.
  • Monitor major project statuses and provide updates to leadership.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience with financial accounting and management, including analysis and reporting techniques.
  • Prior supervisory experience in financial reporting/general ledger areas, demonstrating strong leadership skills.
  • CPA and CECL experience required.
  • Experience in progressively responsible positions in a corporate environment.
  • Ability to lead the team by developing talent strategies for career advancement and operational efficiency.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Highly proficient in resolving conflicting requests and meeting changing requirements.
  • Extensive experience in researching, interpreting, and applying GAAP and Accounting Standard Codifications.
  • Change agent with experience in initiating and managing change.
  • Ability to represent the team in various settings, including with Executives.
  • Prior public accounting experience (e.g., Audit, Advisory, Consulting).
  • Experience with PeopleSoft and ERP implementation.
  • Thorough knowledge of NCUA policies and their application to Navy Federal's operations.
