About the position

The position is a leadership role within a specified nursing area, responsible for overseeing patient care activities, unit operations, and staff development. The leader assumes 24-hour accountability for the unit, ensuring the delivery of safe and effective patient care while promoting evidence-based practices and compliance with healthcare regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and promote evidence-based practice and research among unit leaders and staff.
  • Promote best practice implementation on the unit.
  • Work independently with limited direction from the nurse executive.
  • Utilize delegation skills effectively.
  • Direct recruitment and retention activities on the unit.
  • Conduct performance appraisal processes.
  • Direct healthcare members in the delivery of patient care.
  • Operate the unit within the approved budget.
  • Facilitate efficient operation of unit activities.
  • Maintain knowledge of documentation requirements for employees' files and patients' records.
  • Administer nursing care to patients, including assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating care plans.
  • Direct and provide emergency support measures as needed.
  • Develop an annual operational plan integrated with Mercy's strategic plan.
  • Develop, implement, and review policies and procedures guiding assigned services.
  • Develop and maintain departmental staffing plans.
  • Participate in human resource planning and provide recommendations for staffing needs.
  • Continuously assess and improve departmental performance based on quality plans and satisfaction data.
  • Supervise assigned management staff and provide necessary education and support.
  • Develop annual operating and capital budgets, monitor performance, and implement corrective plans.
  • Collaborate with other departments in budget preparation and capital priorities.
  • Ensure competent patient care by obtaining and interpreting data and adapting procedures as necessary.
  • Maintain open and positive communication with staff, physicians, and other departments.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Significant experience in nursing leadership or management roles.
  • Strong knowledge of nursing standards, regulations, and best practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions under pressure.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with budget management and financial analysis.
  • Familiarity with quality improvement processes in healthcare.
  • Certification in nursing administration or leadership.
