About the position

The Managing Account Executive (MAE) for Northfield Excess & Surplus (E&S) Brokerage at Travelers Insurance Company plays a pivotal role in managing a diverse portfolio of insurance products tailored for wholesale brokers. This position is centered around providing primary property and general liability coverage for both new and renewal business, ensuring that the offerings align with the specific needs of customers. The MAE will oversee a small team of Account Executives who are responsible for handling renewals in the Casualty and Property sectors. This role demands a decisive and detail-oriented individual who excels in building relationships both internally and externally, which is crucial for driving results and achieving profitability in a competitive market. In this capacity, the MAE will be responsible for the profitability, growth, and retention of an assigned book of business, which primarily consists of moderate to highly complex accounts. The role involves underwriting and negotiating complex customer accounts to minimize risk while maximizing profitability. A significant aspect of the job is to cultivate and maintain relationships with internal partners across the business unit and the broader enterprise, facilitating the creation of sales plans and identifying cross-selling opportunities. Additionally, the MAE will engage with external partners, regularly meeting with wholesale brokers to market and sell Travelers products, with the goal of writing and retaining accounts that align with the company's risk appetite. This position also requires the identification and capture of new business opportunities through consultative marketing and sales skills, as well as the independent development and execution of agency sales plans. The MAE will also be responsible for coaching, training, and performance management of the assigned team, ensuring that all members are equipped to meet the demands of the role and contribute to the overall success of the organization. This position is not only about managing existing accounts but also about fostering a culture of growth and development within the team, making it essential for the MAE to possess strong leadership qualities and a deep understanding of the E&S market.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the profitability, growth, and retention of an assigned book of business while leading a small team of Account Executives.
  • Underwrite and skillfully negotiate complex customer accounts to minimize risk and maximize profitability.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with internal partners within the business unit and across the enterprise to create sales plans and identify cross-selling opportunities.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with external partners by regularly meeting in person with wholesale brokers to market and sell Travelers products.
  • Identify and capture new business opportunities using consultative marketing and sales skills.
  • Independently develop and execute agency sales plans and partner with your leader to develop region/group sales plans.
  • Exercise responsibility for coaching, training, and performance management of assigned team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Six to eight years of relevant underwriting experience with experience in E&S lines.
  • Deep knowledge of E&S products and the local insurance market.
  • Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to proactively identify underwriting, marketing, or financial challenges and analyze available information to make timely decisions in alignment with our risk appetite.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to successfully negotiate in difficult situations with agents and brokers.
  • Experience leading others is a plus.
  • CPCU designation.
  • Four years of underwriting experience.
