About the position

SLC Management is seeking a Managing Director, Chief of Staff for the Office of the Chief Investment Officer (CIO). This pivotal role reports directly to the CIO of Sun Life and is integral in driving key initiatives and projects that enable business outcomes and foster growth for Sun Life. The Managing Director will work closely with leadership teams across both Sun Life Financial (SLF) and SLC Management (SLC) to maximize effectiveness and efficiency in executing strategic objectives. The responsibilities of this position encompass a wide range of strategic and operational tasks, including managing content and driving action items that arise from various SLF and SLC initiatives. This involves tracking action items for the CIO, supporting executive briefings and board meetings, and collaborating with staff on special projects and acquisitions. The role also requires interfacing with internal and external partners on behalf of the CIO, ensuring that all initiatives align with the overarching goals of the organization. In addition to these responsibilities, the Managing Director will oversee the Director of Strategic Projects & Initiatives, managing multiple initiatives simultaneously to facilitate the achievement of SLF and SLC Management's strategic and operational goals. This includes establishing key project objectives, timelines, and performance metrics, as well as proactive stakeholder management and integration of change management methodologies. The role demands strong communication skills to clearly convey current priorities and success metrics, and to prepare the CIO for internal and external meetings. Overall, this position is designed for a strategic thinker who can navigate complex environments and drive initiatives that contribute to the long-term growth of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Manage multiple initiatives simultaneously to facilitate achievement of SLF & SLC Management's strategic and operational goals.
  • Establish key project objectives, timelines, and milestones, developing appropriate performance metrics with business sponsors.
  • Proactively manage stakeholders and integrate change management methodologies.
  • Collaborate with peers, leaders, and work stream leads to resolve issues and remove roadblocks.
  • Communicate current priorities and success metrics clearly.
  • Prepare the CIO for internal and external meetings, participating directly when needed and following up with relevant parties.
  • Represent the CIO as a proxy when required.
  • Maintain prioritized action plans for the CIO and address appropriate items directly.
  • Facilitate collaboration across SLF, SLC Management, and Affiliate companies, identifying and implementing innovative solutions.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Office of the CIO and SLC Strategy & Initiatives to oversee strategic projects and initiatives.

Requirements

  • MBA, CFA or advanced degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of asset management and investment experience, strategic planning, project management and/or implementation.
  • M&A experience strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience managing a diverse portfolio of initiatives with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively to help grow the business over the long-term.
  • Strong planning and project management skills with the ability to prioritize work in alignment with organizational strategic goals.
  • Analytical and data-driven decision-making mindset.
  • Excellent project management abilities, including creating timelines, budgets, and reports.
  • Operates with a high level of integrity, maintaining discretion and confidentiality.
