About the position

The Managing Editor, Faculty Journals at the University of Chicago Law School is responsible for leading the editorial, review, and production processes for the Law School's two faculty journals, the Journal of Legal Studies and the Journal of Law and Economics. This role involves close collaboration with faculty editors, managing peer review workflows, and supervising production staff. The position requires a strong background in academic publishing and editorial management, ensuring high-quality output and adherence to publication standards.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare manuscripts for publication, including screening electronic files and enforcing publication guidelines.
  • Maintain the journals' style sheets and negotiate editorial changes with authors.
  • Oversee the peer review process, including author and reviewer correspondence and performance reporting.
  • Manage editorial office operations, including issue preparation and selected marketing efforts.
  • Provide reports detailing submissions statistics and trends in submission rates.
  • Conduct long-term planning for financial, style, and design aspects of the journals.
  • Support the journals' marketing efforts and prepare budgets and balance sheets.
  • Maintain relationships with outside vendors and track expenses in University financial systems.
  • Edit complex manuscripts for grammar, punctuation, and clarity with minimal guidance.
  • Design and maintain editing schedules and manage proofreading stages.

Requirements

  • A college or university degree in a related field.
  • 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of and experience with legal publications.
  • Academic publishing experience.
  • Journal management experience.
  • 5 years' experience copy editing scholarly books and journals.
  • Experience working with faculty editors and authors.
